You will need to un-rar it, i would suggest 7-zip which is free and works very well.

Re: [MOVIE]The Sir. Community Presents: Warlord!

                    Hey guys,
Not sure where to review in these 3 threads so I've just copied the post across all 3.

So here is the Sir. Community first action movie!
First, but not last hopefully and for starters I'd like the bring up what others have said for once.

The video interlacing, I noticed this allot too. The setting you needed to check in the rendering is called "Field order" = which you should leave on none (progressive scan) to blend the frames. Basically don't use anything else not specifically locked in a render template. I.e. HD video uses upper field whereas standard DV uses lower field. (It’s a compatibility issue with TV and such) but because we all watch through a PC monitor just leave it on "None" all the time.

I've also read some comments about the plot/story. I don't wholesomely agree with all of them although looking back there are some unexplained parts where people just get out of their armour or jump off there vehicle to walk slowly towards the enemy to ether get shot or just to walk off without transport without reason. Maybe some needed dialog to explain this more although I did pick up the plot of past run in scenes straight away.
The rest was easy to follow, and the progression speed through the storyline and layout was just right.

For editing, shooting: I really enjoyed all of the stuff as all of it was new to me: the characters / the weapons / the vehicles / the landscape etc.
But it was missing some wide angles. I never did get to see the complex of warlord until at the very end and that was only a 1 second shot. There was a great frenzy of bullet fire on a static shot and it was really really exciting!
For the best scene being the end assault on warlord I think you pretty much covered it all from the infiltration, to the confrontation and escape you can only do so much in the editing process to iron out the loose ends that you get with any bad cut. The footage was put together so that the whole feel of a firefight was played seeminglessly without those entrails.

Since allot of video content have been covered already in other comments I would want to focus on something else and so far the biggest deal in my book is with the audio.

Straight way I could tell there was allot of stitching in the audio, both good and bad. Whereas the sound effects all I can stay is that it needs a bit of tuning, I think there was a more underlying problem with the soundtrack that could have been fixed. I don't think the quality was all that great, maybe it was encoded at a bad setting I don't know but I felt it was partially stuck on mono.

Other things about audio editing, I also told this to Simon Captiva I think, when playing the soundtrack into the background for a sound effect or other temporary reason, don’t just lower the volume… Its like somebody’s just playing with your speakers as you watch, the idea is to put it to 1 side by using the surround sound controls. It’s a minor thing but it does get on my nerves when It happens.

And lastly I like to follow the story with a soundtrack as it help to aid the atmosphere and structure without even having to do anything! I would have liked to hear one soundtrack per scene. Or nothing at all if the scene changes that fast. Btw, OBS uses some same soundtracks, You’ll have to guess which one though as there’s quite a list in Warlord credits.

There we go, I’m XaliaS, that was 1 page of A4 on size 10 font Verdana. I liked this movie a lot!

Over all i thought is was a bit "lets get the terrorists " but the story was good and the end chase was done well. Editing was good for the shots that where in it. But some very doggy camera movements. Sound quailty and mixing was very bad i thought. Well done on handling a very big crew 10 -10.
                      Sound & mixing 4 -10
                      Editing 8 -10
                      Camera movements 5 -10
                      Over all 7 -10

Hmm if we're giving points out. Then I'll give it a go.

                        Camera Movements 9
                        Plot 8

                        28/4=7

                        I think we can agree on a 7. :P

Thanks for the very detailed feedback Xalias, I have been waiting for your big review of the movie. (I knew it was coming :p )

This was my first attempt at a big/professional movie so obviously there were quite a lot of problems. I will be sure to take on all feedback and learn from my mistakes. I think I might as well go through the movie and explain what happen and how it was edited etc...

I had to make this movie on a very low spec’ed computer so battle launcher was and obvious choice. Unfortunately it took a very long time to render all the BFR’s that were filmed. These were kept as short as possible but we still had to set up each time which took awhile on top of . It took around a month of rendering (on and off) to get footage ready for editing. I started editing Warlord using Premiere Pro, but later switched. For a 1 minute clip I would usually have at least 3 BFR files and even more for more complex scenes. Each of these then had to be linked with sound and cut up into separate clips so I could integrate the BFR recordings with each other.

I started by doing all editing for the movie in premiere, and straight away I decided that I would produce it sections to help minimize loading and working times on my laptop (it doesn’t like working with 30+ gb of footage at a time). This started off pretty well until I came to my first test renders, for some reason when I rendered the sound and video at the same time the sound would mess up every time and I never could fix this problem. So I had to render the sound and video separately and then join them back together in my new editing program (Sony Vegas).

As Warlord was being made a patch came out so I hurried to finish all the rendering. It was at this stage that I realised there were a lot of dodgy camera movements but it was to late/I couldn’t be bothered to record again. As for the sound I never really thought to much about it, but it appears that I should have put more effort in here, so I will make the extra effort to learn more about this side of things. Also some strange things happened with the some of the sounds in one of the rendering processes which didn’t help.

Throughout the whole project I had many problems, including losing clips, laptop not coping and others. But I have learnt a lot, and this feed back also helps a lot, especially the long replies.
                          Thanks

                          Sir. Xios

Re: [MOVIE]The Sir. Community Presents: Warlord!

What smiley_ie and xalias said already pretty much sums up what it think also..
The plot was a bit confusing, im not sure if voice acting would have helped ease the confusion. Also, since all the terrorists look alike.. the one that was warlord was confuing to spot out (perhaps you can lengthen the chase to get him while including some voice acting in to confirm that he is the warlord).

The camera angles need to be alot better, I know its hard to overcome the "Move around untill you get a good angle" shot, but try to smooth shots (Only stationary shots, or smoothly moving to point A to point B regardless of whats happening on the screen). I know countless times i have hated myself for moving the mouse slightly to get it lined up to the perfect shot and not just finishing out the smooth tracking shot.

Im not sure what happened to the sound design, but the soundtrack was decent.

Editing was decent. I personally would think some heavy editing on the fighting scene would make it seem more "actiony".

Some of the scenes i did enjoy, like the Solider shooting out the TV and just all those rockets during the chase scene made that scene unique.

Plot - 6 - You can see the people asking questions of why they got out of the APC, you can clear that up before the movie even starts with a readme storyline.
Editing - 8 - Good editing for the clips you had, but lacking some structure.
Sounds - 6 - Im not sure what happened, but they were okay (maybe make it stereo next)
Camera movements - 5 - Needs less jerky angles mainly.. Try some wide angle shots also.

6/10 - I grade harsh whenever i do so dont worry, warlord is still alot better than most of these videos out right now.. good job!

Re: [MOVIE]The Sir. Community Presents: Warlord!

Finished watching it and It was OK.

There was nothing wrong with the content such as the actions scenes etc, they were just fine, especially the final chase which was actually really good, the large number of soldiers and explosions and shooting made for a very exciting scene. The action was all good, however my issues are with the way they were presented.

The movie's biggest problem is a problem that almost all movies (so far) have shown, that is the use of incredibly bland camera angles. 90% of the movie used the quite dull high angle mid-shot that most movies use. The lack of widescreen makes this very obvious, not saying you have to use widescreen but certain camera angles don't work with the cinematic limitations of a 4:3 screen. Also you included alot of bits where the camera moved around for pretty much no reason as if you filmed/included the bits where you were deciding on a camera angle which made it look somewhat amateurish.

Also the sound design was pretty bad (fine in others though) at some points, especially the footsteps which sounded pretty bad and often when multiple people were walking only one set of footsteps could be heard (perhaps a limitation of your editor, which did you use)

Also some of the story seemed like a pretty silly thing to do. Such as the APC stopping and a guy getting out and walking towards 2 cars mounted with machine guns and a solider aiming a rifle at his head. Made no sense whatsoever.

Also at the end they just get out of their vehicle and go to walk down a road when they were in a car, why? Seems pretty illogical, perhaps the car should have been on fire or smoking if you wanted that to happen.

And another thing is the way the death of the warlord was handled, vey unclimactic, I couldn't see which guy the warlord was and then BOOM and the screen says he's dead I was like "What? That was the warlord? ok...."

Looking back I can see I wrote ALOT of criticism but it's alot easier to point out the bad things than the good. I did like the movie so that obviously means it's more good than bad, I just felt I needed to point out/elaborate on those points to help you and any other movie makers that may be reading.

Don't take the criticism too harshly (I know that reading negative criticism, even helpful stuff, can suck big time) as you can see be through alot of the responses that this stuff doesn't seem to worry many people and that it's pretty much only the other movie makers that are pointing out the negatives (you're more than welcome to do the same to ours ).

The most important thing however is that this video is better than most of the crap that shows up here.

PS: Nearly forgot to mention, the pacing was very good, the action scenes weren't too drawn out and before a sequence got repetetive you'd move onto a new one, the zip line scene was particularly good and hasn't been done before.
