As with almost everything, it's subjective.

        Re: Ranks Are Meaningless

Ranks aren't meaningless - they, like the badges/ribbons/medals, are a player's "reward" for putting in the hours and mixing up their gameplay. It's satisfying to get your promotion - when you know you've earned it anyway.

Okay, there's no hard and fast way to tell if the high-ranking players have ever cheated or not, but like someone said, the game has been out quite a while now so some people are going to have logged some serious hours. I don't play all that often (barely 150 hours logged, and I've had the game since August - I just don't have that much free time to give to a computer game), but when I do, I'll have a couple of hours and score a couple of hundred points. If you imagine that there are people who play several hours a day, and it's not exactly beyond the realms of possibility that they might have a higher scoring rate than me (I'm around 1.75 or 1.8 SPM), you can easily see people notching up over 1000 points in a day if they play for several hours. Then they'll be flying through the ranks (the big gap between First Sergeant and Sergeant Major, for example, could be overcome in a month) without cheating at all.

Its a marketing thing to try and keep the players playing, simple as that. Some are more stupid/weak and thus sticks with the game, and certain tactics, alot more than others.

I wonder what the ranking palns for BF2142 are going to be?

that may be a legitimate point if you paid every month for access to your account....

Their profit was made 2 seconds after the cashier took your money for the discs and then extended further if you bought Special Forces or Euro Forces.

If you went out and bought all the software and quit playing tomorrow they wouldnt give a damn.

              Alow me to simplify/clarify...

By having a huge customer base, playing the games they make for a longer period of time, they thus ensure a major part will buy the rest of the series too.

Teenie terms: Kinda like a heroin addict doing heroin for a longer time will be more likely to fall into the addiction again rather than a short-term addict.

              my point "legitimate" enough??

Aside from people who are playing on new accounts,

higher rank -> more experience -> better player

                  Re: Ranks Are Meaningless

Everyone knows, or should know, that one of the primary goals of any game development team is to create a game that is addictive: a game that keeps players coming back for more.

In their model where stats/name/ranks are persistent, and making those ranks the key to accessing some goodies (weapons and opportunity to command), some of the appeal of an MMORPG is created - players have goals to work towards, and something to show off to other players that demonstrates their in-game achievements.

And of course it's a major goal to get more people to play on ranked servers, because that sells more copies of the game.

How's that work? Simple: nothing draws a crowd like a crowd, and if you're interested in selling more copies of the game, what better way than to have some highschool kid named Justin tell his pal Jarred about how there are so many hundreds of n00b-filled servers online all the time, just waiting to get jet-fragged. If there were say 27 people playing online, it's not so appealing to Jarred to spend $50. But if there are 27,000 then it looks like a lot more fun (27,000 people can't all be wrong), so he buys the game and tries it out.

Now EA has 27,001 people online to brag about when marketing the game now. And so it goes...

Like someone said it is subjective.

To me, I could care less what your rank is, and even less what mine is.

People try to qualify it as how good they are in the game. To me, it correlates better with how much you play the game (IE How little of a real life you must have) (ducks)

Sure it does. If you apply for Commander, someone with a higher rank takes precedence.

Not only that, the stat padders cheapen the accomplishments of those who attain the ranks and ribbons honestly.

When I see someone who has a rank of Major or Colonel, I want to be able to see them as skilled and worthy players, not someone who probably are or may be stat padders.

Absolutely not trou... if you are playing and make some "free" points it cannot be significant...

Exaple: If I see two helicopters taking off and both of them inviting me to be their co-pilot, gunner, than I'm SURE that I would choose the player with higher rank... it's not a guarantee but some ppl below gunnary sgt. rank tend to do some creasy ass things...

Actually people playing for a longer time will get EA more money. Think about all the money EA rakes in for every single server thats out. I bet just the strike at karkand servers gives EA a couple grand a month

Ranks are like a recognition for hard work and show your achievement, they make the game more interesting and keep people playing to get to the next rank.

Obviously people like stats padders ruin the system. They have no skill to achieve stuff in the normal way and have to resort to cheating. When you see someone at say Captain rank, you can usually tell if they cheated or not by the way they play, and usually how many points they score.
