I usually have about 34 background tasks running. When I close the user ones, I have like 24. The strange thing is that when I switched back to 512 mb of ram, the game went back to the same speed it ran before. I actually bought 1 gb of ram but I only have 2 slots so I could only intall 1 gb instead of 1.5 gb.

hmmm. i might ta' been wrong about the ram, then. you should try just droppping the 1gb in and see what happens.

there was another guy who had put a 256, a 512, and a 1gb stick (total 1.7gb) in his comp and it screwed things up.

Well, I have 2 512 mb rams in my mobo so I don't think I have a problem with mixing ram. Also, If I just use on new 512 mb piece, the game runs slow. So I think this might be a ram problem.

update all your drivers, i found cpu drivers gave me my best boost, but i still lag thats due to my connection and my lack of ram. My ram runs well for a 2x512, i use 2-2-2-5 latancy which rocks.

From pure luck, I've found someone else who has the same video card and chip speed as I do and has performance issues. The only difference is my RAM, which is 1.5Gb. My maximum framerate in BF2 on Medium settings (with any lighting option turned Off) is no more than 30FPS when I'm looking at a stationary object.

My X1600PRO is tweaked to 559.00Mhz core and 405.00Mhz memory. I have VERY little background processes running (only those that came with my ATi card) and still have performance issues. Are there any tweaks that one can apply to the BIOS for performance gains?

I suggest you try the following( if you havnt already done so ), they will give you a performance boost anyway
1) You say adding the new 512 is slowing it down and that you had to buy 2, the new one you added may be faulty, try it with the other, if that fails, try the 2 new 512's together
2) Update your catalyst drivers( 6.4 is the latest ) but before you do look at 3 first, use ATI Tray tools, i cant see your 3dmark score but this is important for determining your overall system performance
3) Go to tweak guides( goodle search this ), theres a section on removing all your catalyst drivers, remove them all and reinstall. I have an AGP ATI x850 Pro O'C, so i dont know what the bios settings are for PCI-E cards, but if yours is AGP make sure its set to 8x
4) It could be a PCI latency issue, i.e. another PCI card is hogging your system, i had this conflict when i installed a creative X-FI and it definately improved matters, use ATI tray tools to change this
5) You should only have 22 processes listed in Task manager if you kill everything you dont need, Run all spyware software
6) This was killing my system recently - make sure Windows automatic updates is off as i was getting 15Fps 2 days ago and it was driving me crazy, sorted now
7) To further boost performance overall do the following:
Remove all unneeded services in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services like Help and Support, Themes, Fast user switchin etc. Theres a whole load of them, but a bit of trial and error will determine which ones you need and dont need
Remove any desktop picture in XP
Go into system properties/performance and make sure everythings set to best performance
In ATI Tools set the settings for texture and whatever is beside it( im at work now so cant check ) to Quality instead of the highest setting, Also enable Triple buffering for both open GL and Direct 3d, and instance something or other, enable frame synch
In task manager set it to paused so its nut updating task performance saving a bit of CPU time
Kill all the stuff on the bottom right of the taks bar on windows, i.e. Quicktime etc.
Defrag your hard drive, very important for load times and initial lag on startup

If you still have problems, i suggest removing components from your system ,start with modems etc that arent used and if need be move on to sound card etc. It could either be an IRQ conflict or perhaps a heating/power issue, this should reduce that possibility.

Run all the virus/spyware software you have, free ones are Seek and Destroy, Lavasoft one( google it ), and the microsoft one, which is pretty crappy TBH.

did you get the correct speed ram?? if you got slower ram than waht your sytem takes it will slow the faster ram to the lower speed meaning fps drops especially in BF2 its heavy on cpu and ram. also u should probably be using stock speedson your vid card as some times an overclock might seem to b ok but it is actually performing worse. get a program like cpu-z from www.cpuid.com to verify your ram speeds. all in all good luck

by unpluging the power cord from your rig. find the cmos jumper and change from 1-2 to 2-3 if you dont understand what i said i wouldnt try but look in your manual if you have 1

shouldn't need to clear the bios if the clock settings are on auto (where they ought to be unless you're overclocking and know what you're doing).
