Definately true.. But there are other reasons for this too. I do like playing karkand and the citymaps too, because they are such a different experience compared to the other maps.

The more i play, the less i favour the citymaps over the other maps. I've found that well over 50% of the ppl that play the game think that the only way to play it is to rush from the spawn point to the nearest enemy flag. Karkand and some other citymaps are the only maps where this tactic almost alway works at least to some extent, no matter whether u do it on foot or with some vehicle.

The same kind of activity on most of the other maps is just guaranteed to get u killed over and over again. And i'm not saying that the other maps are ruled and ruined by vehicle whores! I'm just saying that the other maps require you to rely on good tactics more than on your reflexes. If you don't have a fast vehicle or alot of firepower to use, youre better off defending that base... a much underrrated tactic in BF2 alltogether.

My fav = Wake, Mashturr and Karkand, In Karkand, its very infantry based, the flags are close by and great for teamwork, it's just a fun map because theres so much to do, eg. Compare it to Zatar. Theres so much stuff happening in one area, great post about the classes, you make a good point, the classes can be uniquely used, eg. On large maps, support won't cut it, and there the addition of a shorter sprint timer. The Map has clearly been thought out fantasticly by Dice, Eg. the mounted Mg and the right arty spawn, good for defence, but won't slaughter everything. There so much stuff happening, you're always near the action and squad work can make you kick ass.

I have no idea why the hell they didn't support MORE infantry based maps on the expansions.

          Karkand rocks.

What would really rock is the inclusion of rooms, stairways, hallways, sewer lines and doors in each and every structure on that map. Fighting block to block is one thing, but MOUT aint MOUT unless you literally have to fight room to room.

            Re: Why Karkand...

The vehicles in this game are borderline more of a nuesance for me (with the exception of transport). I can handle the choppers now (AA is perfect IMHO) and I can keep them grounded easilly enough on Sharaqi, but the tanks are much harder to take out now w/ weakened C4 capability and lacking AT SRAW capability.

The problem with the other maps is that you dont have an option. You HAVE to use a vehicle or your not going to be doing much for that round. The primary three actually give you the option to use what you want to see the action how you want to see it. Want to see it from a barrel, you can, want to see it from inside a car, you can, want to see it inside a tank, you can, want to see it inside a cockpit, you can.

Close combat and Fushe pass should not be in the same sentence.

                  How can you think that?

                    Re: Why Karkand...

First. The biggest reason why Karky is a favorite, is its because its a city atmosphere. That aside, though, if the map played out horrible, it wouldnt be popular. Pretty dont mean fun.
Second. The layout almost forces an "in order" flag capture scenerio. You can to a certain degree, realize that yes, infantry are probally........right.....about ......there. ANd boom. Infantry will be there.
Third. Action. While other maps certainly can (aside from mashtuur, sharky, which are.....low and behold, city maps) provide intense action, it without a doubt pales, when comparing the action to say, Karkand. Lets just say you dont gotta sit at a flag, and think..........where is everyone. Because believe me, you wont have the time to think such things.
Fourth. As said before, variety. I mean you can be effective using any class in the game. Sure you can score mega low scores and achieve alot, but karky gives you a chance to use that pos single shotgun, and get 60 points fairly easily. (ok maybe not fairly easily, but not all that far off though)
                    Fifth. Teamwork. You dont need TeamSpeak, or the in game VOIP to understand what you and your team mates are gonna do. Which leads me to;;;
Sixth. Map design. Again, order. Its pretty much self describes the objectives of the flags. The map design screams to everyone... "THIS IS FLAG NUMBER 1!! , AND OVER HERE I FLAG NUMBER 2."
So it works out rather nicely.
Seventh. Lack of helo and bomber spam. Lets face it. With the really crappy AA Dice testers apparntly think are good. (they must be pilots and dont want decent aa i guess) Anways, since the AA sucks, getting gang raped by helos and bombers just suck. Karky eliminates the lameness. Proving to me, that most folks, just dont want someone dropping bombs on their heads from the sky. I hate to say it, but the planes and helo spam, really takes me out of the game, when i play. Not because im getting raped by them, but seriously, do you really think a helo should be 23 feet off the ground, at a flag, spamming, and killing over 24 people at that flag repeatedly? Nah....thats just silly, and really, kinda lame.
So......i'll keep playing most city maps, to avoid the lame air. I mean, seriously all you gotta do is fly for the next month straight, and you too can be the next super pilot. ANYONE here can do that. But.........i dont see the fun in it, myself.

Have you ever played FuShe pass? The west mine entrance outpost is the best close combat ever, you can hide under the chimney roots, man a TOW and Stinger/IGLA to defend from vehicles, set up mines and C4 and have tons of guns blazing.

99% of the time, Fushe pass is just planes, choppers and a slow paced battle. Nothing is as fast as karkand. The truth is, regardless of anyone's opinion, is that Karkand is the most infantry oriented and was meant to be like that.

As Howie said .... it is one of the few maps that isn't built on a circular pattern. This results in more head on confrontations and less of the chasing each other in a circle crap.

My most played map is Sharqi, followed by Karkand. Mashtuur is in there somewhere. These maps provide lots of cover, lots of elevation changes and lots of head on fights. This is personally what I prefer and I wish there were more maps like them.

Actually, Fushe Pass is very good for fighting if you capture certain points. I remember playing the level in TacticalGamers. We capped the West Mine Entrance and it was freakin amazing. The tanks rolling down the street only to be blown up, the dogfight action from the helis overhead and the infantry coming down those hills. I was playing as Sniper up on the top of that giant pole and saw it all. Very cool.

I play nothing but Karkand - all the other BF2 maps suck, including SF & EF.

What's best about Karkand is that it's so small and there's lots of little places to hide. It's the most "real" map there is. The design is flawless and it's the best thought out map I have played in any game.

No running for 10 minutes to get to a flag only to get killed and start back at the beginning. No aircraft whores.

The Tank & LAV can be annoying sometimes so I occasionally play on an infantry only server.

For me though nothing beats the game where the last flag to fall is the Gatehouse and there's a long onslaught to capture/defend that flag
