Battlefield 2 on a MAC. It works.

Just got done testing BF2 demo on an Intel Imac Core duo 17", running windows through the new Boot Camp emulation Beta software. Pretty impressive results.

I kept telling him that BF2 was going to blow up the imac computer while installing. To my surprise I was able to run on medium, to medium high graphics. 4x anti-alias 1080 x760 or whatever running pretty consistant at 60 FPS. I was in shock. I'm sure I could have pushed it harder and kept it consistantly above 30.

The only thing is, since battlefield is not widescreen supported and the imac is a widescreen. The graphics were stretched. Other than that, performance wise it held it's ground with all but a very high end pc gaming rig. I found this quite surprising.

For those who have wanted a mac but didn't buy because you were excluded from pc gaming, this may be the ticket. I mean after all, BF2 is a beast. If it can run it this well.... there are many other games that would seem to be easily runnable.

Macs are for people that A) don't know any better and B) have more money than brains.

No offence to your friend, but anything you can do with a Mac can be done faster, better, more reliably, and cheaper with a PC. Unfortunatly, with a PC you need to know what you're doing.

Boot Camp isn't emulation software. The Mac runs Windows natively because it's running the x86 architecture... It's like running Linux and Windows on the same computer. As far as I know the only major difference between modern Intel Mac's and current PC's is the BIOS.
And I'm going to have to strongly disagree with Wargimp that PC's are more reliable. Unix has been carrying the Internet on its back for years. Windows can't hold a candle to it in terms of stability.

I've seen that before. Never thought it was that funny. And not cuz I'm a Mac nut. I'm not. In my work I sell both to customers and I currently have a PC. The stuff he was ranting on and on about could happen on any ill behaved computer.

The facts are, the new imac is a very powerful, reliable, stable, machine which would be hard for you to match value wise even if you custom built a PC.

The average consumer is not going to have 1/100th the knowledge of most people on this board as far as maintaining a healthy system or avoiding spyware and viruses on a PC. Some of us might say they shouldn't even own a computer. I might venture they should own a mac.

Macs are very easy to use, very easy to keep a healthy system, and are virtually immune to Viruses and Spyware of anykind. You're average Joe goes and buys a Dell and wants another in a year cuz he thinks it's broke when really it's goo'ed up with malicious spyware from the porn he browses when his wife aint looking. Some people just want to sit down a few minutes and have a computer do it's assigned task with out having to know how to take it apart and build it from the ground up.

Anyway combine the Mac's robust system and full featured media authoring software, integrated fully and natively with the hardware, and you have a reliable affordable machine. A machine which accomplishes a great many things without buying any extra software or hardware... Anyway I'll stop here.

Fact is, many people like and want macs and prefer the Mac OS to Windows. For some of these same people the only thing holding them back is they were excluded from gaming or some crucial Windows App they had to have. It's a pretty big deal that that, is no longer a concern. I think that's pretty impressive. A lot of other people do too, as Apples stock went up 5 dollars last I checked from the release of Boot Camp.

video editing is the only reason I would ever want to use a MAC, only reason. And a powerful pc can run just as good of video editing. But I guess, Macintosh is preventing Microsoft from having a monopoly, so thats good.

I find that clip endlessly amusing... because I've been in that guy's shoes.

In a video editing/prduction class we had to put together a short film. The school's editing lab was entierly Mac based. I set up my edits and set it to render... for 6 hours. At 5 and a half hours, it crashed and corrupted all my source.

              I blew a gasket.

Fortunatly, I had backups of all the source on PC compatible media. I stormed out, went home, and did the whole thing over again on my PC in less than 2 hours. No crashes. I should also point out that my PC had about half the horse power of the school's Macs.

Since then, I burst into giggle fits any time anyone tries to tell me that Macs are better for ANYTHING.

Now was this on OS9 or OS10? Just curious.

Wow, i believe you to be wrong. Thats my opinion. If i substituted "mac" in wherever you said 'PC' and vice versa, your statement would be correct.

Except for the price thing, macs are better now. But price shouldnt matter once you realize what youre paying for. Im not going to waste my breath telling you why, but i sure as hell could.

It was an OS9 Video Editing Custom Build that was supposed to be the best platfrom on the market at the time for doing video editing.

I was not the only one that screamed about the shoddy preformance tho.

Not exactly fair to judge Macs based on that one event, but my statment still remains true. There is nothing that a Mac can do that a PC can't be made to do better and at a lower cost.

I've actually made some money off this. I helped re-fit some local studios by doing custom built PCs talyored to do video and/or audio editing. Took my cut off the hardware sales and still gave 'em a price that was about half of what it would have taken them to stick with Macs. Never had a complaint form the clients.

Unfortunatly, most folks have smartened up and there's not much in the way of a market for Mac to PC conversions anymore.

                    No no... please do!
Aliviate my bias if I'm in the wrong.

There's a big factor in PCs that Macs will never really touch. You can rip open a PC (or build it from the ground up) to do what you want it to do. They are much more flexible and upgradable. Not to mention, when something goes wrong with a PC, you can get in there and fix it. Macs? Well... like the clip says... you're just boned.

All Mac Vs. Pc stuff aside. Didn't you find it a little surprising that a mac could play BF2?

I mean seriously, if I told you that mac had new software out that could run windows and I told you I was going to install BF2 would you even think it would run, let alone run at very respectable settings and framerate. I was surprised.

Re: Battlefield 2 on a MAC. It works.

I posted a thread containing a video that shows Bf2 being played on a Mac yesterday, should be in the next few pages on this forum... Look for it if you want to see a video of it being played.

                        And to Wargimp-

Macs are especially suited to Video editing, and this seems to be your focus. Final Cut Pro and iMovie are excellent software apps that allow you to edit footage to your heart's content, even HD. iMovie is comparable to windows movie maker, and they are very similar. I find the apple software to be more inviting, and more intuitive than a windows app. Ive used both, dont get me wrong, but thats my opinion. Motion, the Apple software created for rendering effects for video, is very very powerful, especially when used with the G5's 64-bit architecture.

There is a certain quality of PC's that make them highly customizable, and this appeals to many people. The reason macs arent made to offer this level of customization is that they dont need to. If you get a good mac, you can do everything a PC can do. Differently, yes, but i find the 'mac way' to be easier, less complicated, and again, more intuitive.

The reason PC's are so customizable is because when windows first came out, only people with enough money and a practical application for such a thing as a PC would buy it. Now, after parts have become cheaper, the PC market is huge... they market to everyone, and have a part for everyone, and every application. Apple, just in the last few years, came along and said, "hey look, we can do all this too, just differently and easier." 90% of the PC market didnt, and hasnt, turned an eye.

Windows is a more robust, hardcore, dirty, muscular, or whatever OS. OS X is all this.. but underneath. Even if you want to use a mac for web browsing, its easy. if you want to network, its easy. If you want to.. hell.. build a supercomputer, its easy. VT did it, and they now have the 3rd most powerful supercomputer in the world. Its literally 2500 macs wired together. You cant order 2500 dells and wire them together, and expect it to work just as brilliantly.

Ill give you this, windows is better for small , minute apps that are coded in a day. You can do anything with the windows code. All im saying is, with OS X you can do all that, and so much more.

Well that explains it. OS9 was a big joke and I can identify with you, having to use it myself in high school for some multimedia projects. At one time I just considered handing in a screenshot of the desktop with that damned bomb error message.

But Macs have come a long way, even since that video. Sure most of the low-end Macs are hard to upgrade, but where can you get a dual-core PC the size of the Mac Mini or the iMac for that price?

Operating systems are a little subjective and everyone should just use what they need, but from a technical standpoint OS10 is the best OS out there right now in my opinion. There's just so many things you can do a lot easier than you can do them on PC, and the command line isn't a joke like Windows's.

Hmm... standard Mac Fan fluff. I don't see any actual reasons there as to why Macs are better than PCs. Remember, you can also go with Linx for either platform and there's some VERY powerful tools out there now. Lot's of studios have gone with Linx platforms... including (from what I've heard) the one that does the effects/editing for Battlestar Galactica.

Anyway... I know it's harder to convert a Mac Fan than a Christian, so there's no real point in continuing with this.
