Have just tested out restarting my computer with all items in the startup tab disabled. Had an hour long go at BF2, and when I exited, noticed not really any improvement. Maps had loaded slightly quicker, and it may have improved the speed by about 30% when exiting. The hard drive continued to work hard for a couple of minutes before I could do anything though. If I load only one map then exit to desktop after playing it, I can start up Internet Explorer in about 3 seconds.

Ok, after disabling everything but AshDsp.exe go back and send us a pic of your processes again sorted by user with your name first.

Another thing I've noticed is that playing the same map over and over also causes this slowdown later on too... it seems that after a certain amount of time BF2 slows the computer right down (I don't notice any performance difference inside BF2 itself though)

Install the game on your SATA drive dude.

I've disabled the intro videos only.

Alright, I'll look into installing BF2 on my second hard drive. I'm not likely to suffer any problems with it being on my 2nd hard drive?

Also i do not recommend disabling the pagefile, that is actually quite a bad idea. At the same time some people's reccomendations i don't agree with either. As a rule of thumb for me i set it so total memory will equal 2mb if i have less than that in physical mem. If there is already 2mb+ in physical mem i would set it to a low pagefile ~250-512 for the minimum and max, and sometimes up to 1056 for max. (if you get the low virtual mem warning).

How Does It Work?

Virtual memory is created using a special file called a swapfile or paging file.

Whenever the operating system has enough memory, it doesn't usually use virtual memory. But if it runs out of memory, the operating system will page out the least recently used data in the memory to the swapfile in the hard disk. This frees up some memory for your applications. The operating system will continuously do this as more and more data is loaded into the RAM.

However, when any data stored in the swapfile is needed, it is swapped with the least recently used data in the memory. This allows the swapfile to behave like RAM although programs cannot run directly off it. You will also note that because the operating system cannot directly run programs off the swapfile, some programs may not run even with a large swapfile if you have too little RAM.

Also not necessarily a direct cause but could be related to non duel-core, hyper-transport/threading. If you have disabled either of these enabling them may help.

Set it to 3 and 6 GB. What kind of HDD do you have?

General performance tip (if its already posted, sorry...)

Set your MIN and MAX pagefile amounts as the same, this way Windows doesnt have to allocate and reallocate page file space on the fly... if you set your pagefile as a static value windows will never screw with it and that saves CPU cycles and performance overall.

Nope, quite the contrary... if you have two hard drives it is an excellent idea to use one as a system and storeage drive (where you have Windows and all your "Files" (be it music, movies, office documents, etc) and the second drive as your "Applications" drive (where you install games and apps not related to your Operating System.

This too can increase overall performance.

Let your C drive click away and do windows crap while you are playing BF2 on your D drive which is totally independent.

Now I dont know whether it is best to put your Page File on your System drive or your applications drive.... hmm.....

Thanks for all the info. I'll get round to reinstalling BF2 onto the 2nd HDD this weekend (something I haven't done since first installing it back in July last year). I'll report back on any performance improvements.

I'll set the Pagefile to 512mb for min and max for both drives. Also, I have got hyper threading enabled on my P4 2.8ghz CPU in BIOS.

have you tried disabling hyper threading ? if the system feels sluggish overall then i would definately disable it.

yeah dont use hypethread on games use recomended pagefile eg.2.5 gig ,disable system restore,exit most task bar items b4 launching bf2 also.

oh yeah run only one hard drive will as little as u can on it
use good drivers
