4-512MB Vs. 2-1GB of RAM

For BF2 and for really all games, which is better to have 4 512MB sticks of RAM or 2 1GB sticks of RAM? I've heard that the 512 is better but then i heard the 1GB is better.

Depending on the CPU, if you have an Intel and can run all 4 sticks at 1T command rate then that is better. With AMD running 2x1GB in 1T would be better than 4x512 @ 2T.

2x1GB is actually cheaper if you can find a deal and is more stable.

4x 512 MB ON ANY CPU is better, due to the matrix addresses. The way they are laid out, is much more efficienct, because theres more pathways to allocate the data. Thats it basically.

Maybe in theory, but in the real world 2 x 1Gb is slightly better. You don't have the possibility of only being able to run your memory at 333mhz or 2T.

Go with 2 x 1Gb for sure.

EDIT: Theres only a 10% performance increase, ONLY in certain applications. Just luck, on which one works the best.

you can get 2x1gb of OCZ ram with 2-3-2-5 settings for 160 bucks. Its on newegg and has a 40 dollar rebate. Normally 200 bucks. I can link it if your going to buy ram. Its DDR400 PC3200.

A pair of 1 gigers is best for several reasons. Most importantly, your mobo's memory controller will have less work to do with two DIMMS instead of keeping up with four. Also, it takes less power from your PSU.

About 1T and 2T settings. I thought Intel mobos default to 2T regardless. If so, if won't matter for an intel user. AMD suffers from a 1T to a 2T drop.

That's possible, I have little experiance with the newer intel sysems. My last intel used RDRAM .

you can manually set the rates with 4 sticks to 1t etc...

as for the only benefits I see of 2x1GB, would be you can addmore sticks in the future, but the only way to keep dual channel would be to have 4GB. and the only way to have 4gb is windows x64.

Maybe you computer 'whizzes' should head over to www.dfi-street.com

The supposed increases in performance will be unnoticed at best.
You only worry about 1T and 2T w/ overclocking. (Even though it is necessary to use the appropriate setting w/ each setup)
If you go 4 sticks(4x512MB), you'll be fine dude. If you choose 2 sticks (2x1GB) you'll be fine there also.

Actually, thats a good point. I guess in the end, it all comes down to a draw. Why not just put 2x 1GB, then save up for another 2x 1GB for the other 2 slots :)

Because 4 gigs of ram is pointless, and will continue to be pointless for some time.
