Processor Question

I am between two processors:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Newcastle 800MHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor - OEM

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail

I am leaning twoards the first processor, which operates .4 GHZ higher, but I noticed the second processor has a 1GHz HT, but the first has a 800 MHz HT.

What is an HT? Is it better to have a little more HT witht .4 less on the processor, or vice versa?

Anyway, check out the processors and also let me know if you would recomend another model.

I will be running a pc (AMD only please) with 2 gigs of ram and a Lanparty Muthaboard.

So yes, any other processors you could recomend UNDER 200 dollars that are a better value/out perform these other two?

Go with the 3200, it's S939 which has a better memory controler and is 90nm. Stay away from S754 processors.

The HTT is similar to the front side bus in other processors.

As for recomending other CPUs, do you plan on overclocking at all? If you do this would be a great one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103598

Go with the 2nd one.. the 754 sockets are out of date. The 939 will be much easier to upgrade in the future. But i do recomend a faster CPU, a 3500+ 939 socket would be very nice, i dont know how much they are in USD though.

Yep go for the Socket 939...

Also if you'd like to OC i think the 3200 is a good chioce but i would go with a 3500 or higher if i were you.... there isnt THAT much of a price difference..

If you are planning on OC'ing.. go with the 3200+ if not, 3500+.

I wouldn't mind overclocking, but I have NO clue how. If I would overclock the 3200, I would only overclock it to achieve a 2.4-2.6 GHz speed (from the original 2 GHz)

That would be unlikely with stock cooling, if you invested in a good cooling unit and were lucky with the CPU you could.

first off, even if you dont OC, go with the 3200. the 3500 is almost 40$ more, and the performance difference is not even there. you might get one fps more... in a couple games. and maybe a half a second or two in other programs.


as for venice and clawhammer. it really depends because clawhammer is the core for some, whereas there is NO venice core for that specific model, i believe one of the only models with both types is the 3500, and MAYBE the 3200 not sure.

as for which one to pick...venice. heres why. I have heard that venice cores are much better overall for overclocking. I do not know if that is true because I have never had both, but mine overclocks great, and others who have them say they do too. another thing which I know is on the venice core, but I do not know about the others is the memory controller and all that. I believe that the Venice and the newer chips have a better memory controller, so you can run 4 sticks of ram in 1t timings.. clawhammer and older ones cannot do that.
if anyone thinks im wrong feel free to add in, but i think that is all right. in the end: go with the venice 3200+.
take the 40$ you WOULD have spent on the 3500+ and use it to buy a video game that you would play using your new computer. even though computers are a hobyy and all that, the point of a gaming rig is to play games, so go do that.
