      Re: Processor Question

I have the 3200+ Venice and know pretty little about how to properly overclock (Just ask Lil_Jimmy_Norton), but even I was able to easily achieve a stable 2.4ghz on my stock cooler. I probably haven't maxed out my new heatsink/fan combo (just got it on Friday and it's my first aftermerket heatsink) but I can now benchmark 2.5ghz. With a little research into overclocking and better fan/AS5 placement, I should be able to stabalize 2.6ghz. All my hardware is warrantied for overclocking so the only thing I have to worry about is frying my processor, which really won't happen because it will lock up and freeze before any damage takes place. From what I understand, overclocking your cpu is the safest part because if it's too hot it just stops working. Good luck.

I'd still go with the Opteron 146, of if you can afford to toss another $114 or so at a processor, go with the 165. It's a dual core core, and although it's .2ghz slower at stock, it should overclock equally to the 146.

as for venice and clawhammer. it really depends because clawhammer is the core for some, whereas there is NO venice core for that specific model, i believe one of the only models with both types is the 3500, and MAYBE the 3200 not sure.

as for which one to pick...venice. heres why. I have heard that venice cores are much better overall for overclocking. I do not know if that is true because I have never had both, but mine overclocks great, and others who have them say they do too. another thing which I know is on the venice core, but I do not know about the others is the memory controller and all that. I believe that the Venice and the newer chips have a better memory controller, so you can run 4 sticks of ram in 1t timings.. clawhammer and older ones cannot do that.
if anyone thinks im wrong feel free to add in, but i think that is all right. in the end: go with the venice 3200+.
take the 40$ you WOULD have spent on the 3500+ and use it to buy a video game that you would play using your new computer. even though computers are a hobyy and all that, the point of a gaming rig is to play games, so go do that.

No A64s can run 4 sticks at 1T. The newer cores can run 4 stciks at full DDR400 speed, but not 1T.

If you plan on overclocking at all ingnore the advice given to you by everyone else and get an opteron, then are head and shoulders above the rest for overclocking.

Not the best choice IMO, but not bad.

Since he doesnt want to OC i think this is the best choice

                  He said:
I wouldn't mind overclocking, but I have NO clue how. If I would overclock the 3200, I would only overclock it to achieve a 2.4-2.6 GHz speed (from the original 2 GHz)
Not that he didn't plan on overclocking. Even if you don't plan on it, you never know when you will get the bug to do it. My first A64 I didn't plan on overclocking and look where I am now.

                    Re: Processor Question

I agree, I would *definitely* take the Opteron over the Athlon. You can squeeze at least another 500 MHz out of most without even really trying on stock cooling/voltage/power supply and middling ram, and I've had the 148 past FX-57 performance with no appreciable rise in temps or voltage.

The 3500+ Venice has a mixed record as far as overclockability goes. I had one and it was not very cooperative at all, although I know others have had good success with certain cores.

As far as introductory overclocking guides go, this is easily the best one out there for the 939's:

Most of the overclocking guides seem to be written by geeks who don't have a pedagogical bone in their body. This one is actually clear and very thorough.

                      AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail

I am leaning twoards the first processor, which operates .4 GHZ higher, but I noticed the second processor has a 1GHz HT, but the first has a 800 MHz HT.

What is an HT? Is it better to have a little more HT witht .4 less on the processor, or vice versa?

Anyway, check out the processors and also let me know if you would recomend another model.

I will be running a pc (AMD only please) with 2 gigs of ram and a Lanparty Muthaboard.

So yes, any other processors you could recomend UNDER 200 dollars that are a better value/out perform these other two?

                      Thanks!

get amd64 3400 newcaste. yes it's out of date, but it's noticably faster than new 939. save yourself some money get a better video/sound card. you also will save on motherboard with this baby.

this idea about buy now for tomorrow is crap. most people overpay today and then have to upgrade in the future anyway.

This statement isn't entirely true. The newer DFI boards can run 4 Dimms at 1T command rate as well as some other boards out there. You can run at 1T, but it's not overclockable at all. I think the newer boards coming out will be able to run 4 x dimms at 1T more commonly.
