256 is recommended. i downgraded to 128 with my new card because i couldn't find a 256 version, and it plays just a little better even though it has a smaller amount of ram it has. if i had a 256 version, i'm sure i could easily play on medium settings no problem.Comment

so i would have to have the settings on low to play with a 128Mb X700 Mobility Radeon?

i have a 128MB 6600gt....it defaults mine on medium for bf2, but i put everything down to low, except 1024x768, high geometry, and 100% view distanceComment

Actually I believe that the extra vid memory is generally unused by current technology... but of course I'm not a big comp buff. As of now I think gfx really only take advantage of 128 memory, 256 is just a gimmick for now I believe.Comment

Extra GDDR only help if the gpu is good as well. Compare a FX5200 256MB to a FX5200 64MB in a game that utilizes 256MB GDDR. Maybe a 1 fps difference.Comment

Memory is directly proportional to the quality of the textures and the screen resolution, and amount of AA and AF. If you only play low res @ 800x600 64MB of ram would probably be fine, even on a fast card like a 7900 or x1900, but most people play with high quality and at higher resolutions.
Its all about finding a good match, and one can do that by reading reviews and looking at benchmarks. 256MB is the sweet spot right now, and unless your buying a sub $150 card you will want 256MB.Comment

To be honest, its a "depends" question. If you have a high end card (i.e. 7800, X1800, anything else worth over about $300), then yes, to get the most out it you'd want 256MB.Originally posted by brickloaf
On a lesser card though, such as an X1300, 7300, etc, they often put more RAM on it to trip up people. They simply won't use the added RAM. Long and short of it is, don't buy a lesser chipset with more RAM, you're better off with a middle of the road card with less RAM.
Man there are a lot of these style posts at the moment, if I could be assed I'd write a guide. Otherwise go to somewhere like Tom's Hardware and look at their performance comparison charts to get a better ideo.Comment

Games like COD 2 are already taking advantage of 512mb of memory. I would get a 256mb card minimum.Comment

With a mobility chip its less about the quantity of RAm but more about the specification of the chipset. Mobility have always played second fiddle to their desktop counterparts so compare it to a desktop x600 or something along those lines, it should be fine on medium-ish.Comment

alot of mobile graphics also use shared ram, which hurts performance overall.
Generally speaking, yes, the more you pay the better it is. However, it is always good to shop around. At a local best buy a 6600GT with 128 of ram is around $200. I found a site that sells a 6800GT brand new in the box. Know your video cards before you start to go shopping for them.Comment
