*****UPDATE*********
the upgrade is complete!! I will list what I upgraded from and then what I upgraded too and my experience in BF2 as a result for those wishing to know what it would play like with an upgrade.
Had
P4 3.2 800FSB
6800GT 256MB AGP (Overclocked to 405/1.15)
ABIT IC-7 MOBO
2GB Corsair Ram
Upgraded To
AMD 64x2 4800+
7800 GTX 256MB PCIe (Overclocked to 485/1.30)
ASUS A8N32 SLI Deluxe
(Same RAM as before...didnt change)
BF2 experience
With my old setup I was running no AA or AF 1280x1024 with all my settings on medium except geometry which I set to high. I was getting 40-50 FPS on 32 player servers and on 64 player servers on maps like Karkand or Kubra Dam it was in the low 20s. Still playable but very choppy.
With the new setup I am running 4xAA and 16xAF at 1280x1024 with every setting on high. I jump on a full 64 player Karkand server and in the middle of a massive gun battle right in the middle of the city with ARTY going off everywhere, tanks, about 40 men running around my framerates dipped to a minimum of 30 a couple times but stayed steady in the 40-50 range. Away from the heavy stuff and it is 60-70 FPS. But the BIG difference is the lag I used to get around buildings is gone. When I would get around big buildings my game would get choppy..the FPS stayed fine but there was a definite choppiness that used to tick me off. Now its gone. I would have to chalk the new experience up to mainly the new 7800 GTX. I know it seems like a suttle upgrade going from a 6800 but going from AGP to PCIe can make a huge difference. It did in my case. Now I am happy as a clam!! :)
