hmm nearly a GHZ overclock on air cooling, i find that somewhat doubtful

      I don't. I had my old 3000 at 2.65 with no problems.

*me slaps my 2.8 presscott that topped out at 3.5ghz*

(was stable until the power supply gave out and now i wont clock past 3.2 think its slightly damaged, but still works fine at normal clock speed)

agreed. I put a really small dot on and then smooth it out to the edges using a razorblade. I use the thinest layer possible without being able to see thru it.

Smothing it out isn't a great idea. And if you put it on thick enough that you can't see through it you're using way too much.

I have tried pouring it on, puting the recommended amount, and putting very little on. Each time I saw a thermal difference of 0*C. Congrats.

Did you let it cure properly? You will notice no immediate diffrence.

                  Re: Arctic Silver 5

I noticed a difference between arctic silver 5 and regular thermal paste, just not in the amount i put on. Considering most heatsinks are setup so they squeeze down on the CPU, anything more than the regular amount will just be squished out the sides... which has happened to me when I put too much on. In my relatively limited experience putting too much on won't cause a problem unless you're not mounting the heatsink on properly so it applies the proper amount of pressure. I'd rather have too much and have it ooze out the side than not enough to compensate fill any flaws or grooves on the heatsink bottom.

why wouldnt you want to smooth/spread it out over the entire cpu? I doesnt seem logical to just blob on some and press the sink on. thats leaving the outer edges of the cpu unprotected.

I definately know im not using too much. im using the thinnest layer I can make. I monitor my temps and their good and havent seen any problems.

Read the directions, you are supposed to leave the outer edges free of compound. The actual core is much smaller than the IHS. I reiterate, you ARE using too much.

Read the part regarding the large IHS processors.

Here's an image of the proper amount and application.

On an Intel P4 or Athlon64 type CPU with a large metal heat spreader, put a small amount of Arctic Silver onto the center of the heat spreader as shown in the photo.

Only a small amount of Arctic Silver is needed

P4- About the size of an uncooked grain of short-grain white rice or 1/2 of a BB.

Athlon64- About the size of one and a half uncooked grains of short-grain white rice or 3/4 of a BB.
                      10.

RECHECK to make sure no foreign contaminants are present on either the bottom of the heatsink or the top of the CPU core. Mount the heatsink on the CPU per the heatsink's instructions. Be sure to lower the heatsink straight down onto the CPU.

Once the heatsink is properly mounted, grasp the heatsink and very gently twist it slightly clockwise and counterclockwise one time each if possible. (Just one or two degrees or so.)

Please note that some heatsinks cannot be twisted once mounted.

Our testing has shown that this method minimizes the possibility of air bubbles and voids in the thermal interface between the heat spreader and the heatsink. Since the vast majority of the heat from the core travels directly through the heat spreader, it is more important to have a good interface directly above the actual CPU core than it is to have the heat spreader covered with compound from corner to corner.

Sorry ... can't find what you are looking for :(

Opteron 170 dual core, 1Ghz overclock with 1.56volts. Using a Scythe Ninja with 120mm enermax adjustable fan.

Why are you guys arguing with the actual arctic silver instuctions? If you don't follow the directions you are wrong.

thanks. when I got my AS5 it didnt come with any instructions. the part about trapped air makes sense. looking at that above photo though, thats about the amount I used.
