ok guys, i just spent some time scraping and cleaning my heatsink and my processor free of my 2 yr old stock thermal paste/pad. applied some arctic silver 5, as well.

question is tho, do the temperatures normally go higher than normal, and slowly start to come back down? i applied the silver, and immediatly hooked my system back up and started up. went straight to bios, and my temps were at ~44 C....before they were at ~38 C. now i been up and running it for about 20 minutes, and PC Wizzard shows me back down to ~38C.

so does it take some time before you see some significant results? i have a 2.6ghz p4, btw.

It depends on if you followed the instuctions, but it will take a while to set so your temps will prob drop another degree or two before it levels off.

ya, i did follow the instructions. cleaned all the other gook off really good with alcohol...small amount right in the center of cpu...placed heatsink on firmly (coudlnt do the whole thing about twisting the heatsink back and forth a little cuz the way it is it cant move).

also cleaned my heatsink really good from dust...but there wasnt much on there anyways.

when you apply thermal paste its best to leave it running for a couple of hours so the thermal paste can "bond" or "cure" then switch it off letting it cool to the room temperature, it will them be at its most efficient.

I would scrap off the layer you just applied, and reapply a second time. Temps will fluctuate after install, but not more than a degree or two, and if your temps are higher than before its worth reapplying and reseating the heatsink.

It only takes a drop of AS5 to do the job and the standard bottle is probably good for 20+ applications.

well, im not too worried, considering after playing bf2 my temp was ~42 C

i havnt even shut down my computer yet....i put that stuff on 8 hrs ago...and now its actually down a few degress than what it was with the stock intel heat junk. maybe the on and off bf2 play warmed and cooled it. :P

Looks like you missed this little bit of info from the AS5 site,

During the CPU's initial use, the compound thins out to enhance the filling of the microscopic valleys and ensure the best physical contact between the heatsink and the CPU core. Then the compound thickens slightly over the next 50 to 200 hours of use to its final consistency designed for long-term stability.

And as someone above mentioned, that also requires shutting down and letting everything cool down to room temperature (not a problem if you shut down for the night).

Also, it is possible you put too much on. It should be the size of a grain of rice. The rule is- If you think you need to put more you already put too much.

How is that a stupid rule? The #1 mistake people make when applying thermal paste is they put TOO much on. the coverage isn't for the entire chip, it is for the center of the chip, and just shy of touching the edges, and a perfect circle. When you apply the paste it is meant as a transfer from the chip to the heatsink, the thinner the better, otherwise it can act as a thermal barrier keeping heat on the chip and not allowing the transfer. On chips with no "top" the chip center and heatsinks smear only need to be covered, also for some AMD chips.

I've never followed the advice of putting a drop in the middle of the CPU.
If you want to use that method do a trial first and see how much the artic
silver is spread out from the pressure of the heatsink. I always apply a
thin layer evenly distributed on the whole CPU core. I use a CD cover to
spread it out. My AMD 64 3000+ (1.8Ghz) is currently running at 2.75Ghz
at 1.6v and temperature is 36 degrees celsius (NorthQ NQ-3312 cooler).
