    I figured you knew it since you had the list right. But i wanted to point out that the chipset is pretty important to be first, for the original poster.

    Too many times ive seen people install the chipset last or not at all and weird, weird things happen. :laugh:

      Yeah, I've done that before back in the old Win95 and 98 days. Wow, was that ever a mess. Gave up and formated again, I think. It had lost it's marbles big time.

      On the topic: If I'm remembering it correctly now, you need to use the XP setup disk at startup to format the drive. That should be in those guides, though.

      I've done it a bunch of times (on my own and for others) but I guess I'm just lousy at explaining things. :laugh:

        problem is the disk is Service pack 1, and i have service pack 2..

                That should do it. If you're really unfamiliar with it, I'd say print out the directions just so you can double check.

                    Depends on how big the hd is, a full format for me takes 45 mins.

                            ??? my 74gb Hitachis take 30 minutes each... maybe 20.
                            Anyway, I usually watch a movie while reformatting+reinstalling windows+installing all my drivers and programs.

                              OK, i've done everything step by step, however now i want to upgrade to service pack two. when i go to the windows update site i get this.... and when i try to fix it by going to services.msc it still doesn't work... any suggestions? plz?


                              i'm gonna try to dl service pack 2 via 3rd party site...

                              Edit:well the one i dl from a 3rd party site just isn't working, any help would be very helpful...
