Overclocking woes.

Ok so.... I went into my bios and started playing around, but quickly ran into a brick wall.

My understanding of overclocking is upping the frequency to acheive a higher clock. I also thought that the multiplier is unlocked only on certain chips (a la FX57, FX60)

So i find no way to change the frequency of my CPU on the bios, it has a manual setting and says i can change it between 140 and 300, but it sits at 200 with no way to change it (that i can see).

However, my multiplier is apparently unlocked because i dropped the multiplier down to 10 (from 11) and it dropped the core clock from 2.2ghz to 2.0. So I can underclock, how do i get this bish to overclock?

NOTE: cant up the multiplier past 11, so no go there. I need to chance the core frequency.

So, i figured out how to change the frequency so thats no longer the problem.

nevermind i guess.

I got it from 2.2ghz to 2.26 LOL!

I was trying to scroll in the frequency box, instead i tried typing numbers into and it changed.

I've got it at 2420mhz right now.

When i bough the 3400+ it came in two flavors.

2.2Ghz 1MB Cache (what i bought)
or
2.4ghz 512k cache

Now i have all the clock and all the cache.

All AMD 64's are downward multiplier unlocked. The FX series are upward and downward multiplier unlocked. That is a clawhammer core so don't expect anything over 2.5-2.6Ghz max.

Yeah i know the clawhammer wasnt gonna go too far. Its just something to tinker with since its an older system, and id rather learn on this than something brand new.

Unfortunately the Clawhammer is just too inferior to the Manchester, i'd never hit 2.9 on this thing without frying it.

I want to invest in a 3800+ sometime soon though and get it going nice and quick, if i get a good one.

I might push for 2.5ghz today if i get bored but....i dont want to take it past that. My voltage is already around 10% above stock.

EDIT: I meant 3800+ single core when i said running at same speeds. The dual core is a bit different. Actually the dual core 3800 is fairly pathetic at stock speeds at only 2Ghz.

ya, even clocked to 2.5 my P4 rig kills it in alot of tests, which suprised me

change the front side bus...

multiplier X front side bus = CPU speed.

On my 3700 san diego (2200MHz standard) I currently have a 213 FSB and the multiplier at the standard x11 = 2343MHz OC.

MY motherboard is an Asus A8NE - not a great overclocker and I have 4 x 512 sticks of ram. So I have a 2T command rate and slightly slower timings.

When I have 220 FSB x 11 = 2420 MHz OC... I need to slow ram timings a little more and increase the voltage through the RAM to about 2.75 V to get stable running.

Edit: But you know how to anyway now.

Btw. Lowering the multiplier is great for seeing how high you can get your FSB. But your overall speed will not increase, it may even be worse.. I tend to leave the multiplier at stock.
