Decide wich AMD

Well right now i have a Intel 640 wich is a 3.2 presscot LGA775 with 2MB of L2 cache. Whitch AMD is equivalent to it, that way i can go from there. Please dont respond if you are not pretty much and expert, i dont want the well a 3200 is the same as yours so anything over it ********. Also i would like dual core, but seems kind of spensive right now. Thanks again.

P.S. Yeah i misspelled witch.
P.S.S. I dont plan to OC either.

I'd go with a 4400+. That's what I have and I love it. You can go with a 4800+ or FX-60 too.

For dual core, go with the x2 3800+, good price and great performance. For single core, go with either a 3500+, or a 3700+, both are good. All of the procs I mentioned are s939.

I have a X2 4400 and its great. If you do go dual core do not get the 4800 as it is a compleate waste of money youll end up spending a few hundred pounds extra and the only difference from a 4400 will be 200MHz

I'd definitely choose a 3800 or a 4400 x2. Both offer good price per performance, just depends on how much money you're willing to spend

If i were you wait until around June for AMD's new socket. That way you can keep your current DDR2 ram (i am assuming you have DDR2)

Otherwise if you dont care about switching ram, or your running standard DDR the x2 3800+ is a cheapest dual core and a star performer. Probably the only chip you will want to consider, maybe one step up from that at most.

No, i have the old 915 chipset, so only DDR, 2 gigs too, tha's why im leaning towards AMD. I wanted to buy a new 975X chipset that way when conroe come out i can get one, but is not sure is going to work. Plus i would have to buy DDR2 now, and i want 800, but the lowest CL for DDR2 800 is 4(yuck). Also i want to run SLI, so there goes the 975X. I like the 3800X2, but just seems kind of slow, and the current cpu i have performs better. soooooo. Im kind of leaning towards and FX60. Now im kind of stuck on a mobo. Grrrr i hate making these choices, lol, thanks guys, i will look into the 3800X2. I know it can OC well, but i am not a big fan or it.

Ya if you can afford the FX-60 go for it, ive seen it benchmarked and it owns

equivalent: a 3000+ ,
even a X2 3800+ is better than a 3.2 prescott.

but a 3200+ single core performs better and is very cheap.

Optys are better than the X2s, but they're cheaper. They're going outta production so ya better hurry. And opty 165 or 170 would be great.

Opterons are pointless unless you overclock, which the OP says he does not. Opterons have more cache than the cheaper X2's, but the same as the high end X2 and FX-60, so no advantage there. Only other differentiator is a lower default voltage, which is important to keep servers cool, but also allows more OC headroom... again something that is irrelevent here.

Unless Ocing, an X2 is the same damn thing as an Opteron, so no point spending $50-$100 more for the same frigging chip.

For the $$ the 3700+ is a great deal, the 90n formfactor and double the L@ Cache (1mb vs. 512k), for about $212.00 it cannot be beaten.
