Si! and most people don't upgrade their cpu that often, so I would think it would be best to get a dual core if you're upgrading now.

Yes dont do the mistake and bying what is sufficient for now. Buy the best so itll last longer. I got a 3000+ socket A, instead of a 3500+ Socket 939. Now im stuck upgrading again just because if got the best that socket A can handle. So a fx-60 would last 3 years with the power that thing has.

Well guys, i think i decided, and bad news for some is that im probably going to stay intel. Thinking about the 920, price wise is cheaper than the 3800X2, and wins on most of the benchmarks(yes even in games). The only reason is cause i want to get the new coroe when it comes out. So i'll have to have till 2Q of this year for intel to put all the cool stuff into the 920 like speed step(cool and quiet) and all the other techs.
Thanks for everything, i would love to get the 3800X2 but the price is a bit steep for the performance.

The 920 will be slower than what you already have, and the X2 3800+ is $40 more than the 920... lol

Well like i said i was looking at a comparison of alot of benchmars, and i believe the 920 won like 80% to 85% over the 3800X2. And yes it is cheaper.
True only 40, but i also have to buy a new mobo and memory, wich i need 2 gigs. So those 40 bucks are going to something else.

You need a new motherboard for dual core either way. I would wait until conroe really, your going to put a bunch of money into obsolete tech either way, s939 or the presler 920, but the presler is being replaced by a fundamentally different chip by summer, where as the Athlons are just getting DDR2 support.

Also the only chipsets that support Conroe that are out today is the i975X, and those all cost $220+. If you get an i945 chipset, or a i955X it will NOT be conroe compatible.


These benchmarks really go into the whole architectural differences of presler vs the older smithfield chips. They dont have a 920 at this time (slightly older review) but a 820 which is very comperable, the extra cache does little and other than that presler is only die shrunk.

I think it makes a compelling case for an X2, but with your current rig, it might be better to just wait until summer, both AMD and Intel will have all new stuff out, and its not like your computer really needs to be replaced right now. Who knows, conroe might be kick ass, we will have to wait.

Well right now i have a Intel 640 wich is a 3.2 presscot LGA775 with 2MB of L2 cache. Whitch AMD is equivalent to it, that way i can go from there. Please dont respond if you are not pretty much and expert, i dont want the well a 3200 is the same as yours so anything over it ********. Also i would like dual core, but seems kind of spensive right now. Thanks again.
