I would say 2.6Ghz on air is realistic, 2.8GHZ on air is very unlikely unless you research and get the right stepping, and 3Ghz on air are the cherry picked of the best steppings. This is relating to dual core only.

It really irks me that you always say probably, you really shouldn't mislead the noobs like that. Yes some have got to 3.0 on air, some with stock cooling, but most havn't.

Srry, i don't know much about dual core optys. I've just heard tons of stories that 2.0ghz Opteron 146's have gotten to 3.0ghz on stock cooling. So i assumed it was same for dual core, but i guess i'm wrong.

SO if i got a AMD 4200 X2 and overclocked it to 2.8ghz, would I be able to run it on stock cooling or would i need a new fan?

We're talking about Opterons, not X2s, Opterons generally overclock further than X2s. And, they ALWAYS come with a 2mb l2 cache (2x1mb l2 caches).

If you go for an X2 dont get the 4800 for 200mhz more then the 4400 it isnt worth the money. Instead you can get a 4400 and overclock it to give the same preformance as the 4800.

Or, u could just buy an opteron and overclock that to FX-60 speeds or higher.

If u wanna go for ultimate dual core processor with overclocking capabilities, the OPteron 180 is at 2.6ghz and it's dual core, it's 200 bucks cheaper than teh FX-60, and generally overclocks better.

Negative. The FX-55, FX-57, and FX-60 are processors near their thermal limits. They run hot and its generally not possible, or recommended, to overclock them. The little overclock you can get from them, you can get the same overclock from a lower processor like a Opteron 170 or something.

Well, if you can afford that proccessor, you could probably afford a nice phase change unit (Liqid Nitro)

Well im exxagerating, but you SHOULD be able to hit 3.0-3.2 on water if you are an expierienced overclocker.

Phase Change isn't liquid nitrogen, nor does it use it.

Not necessarily. Water doesn't do much better than air, maybe 5°C lower temps. It depends on the procesosr though. Before, people were getting 3.1GHz on air, now its more of a 2.8Ghz thing. Equipment has more to do with it than overclocking skills.

Just get an AMD Opteron and some decent cooling for say 300$ and overclock it to FX-60 speeds or higher. I just saved you at least 600$. Do say thank you

Bingo. I went with the Opteron 165 and love it. Before this I was running a AMD 64 4000+ overclocked to 2.8GHz and it was pretty fast. The Opteron i've gotten up to 2.7GHz (faster than the FX60) but moved it down to 2.5GHz, cause i'm only running the stock AMD cooler, which keeps this beast temps at 30C @ idle and 45C under full load. After I get my new cooler i'll move it back to 2.7GHz.
As for load times in BF2 between the 4000+ and the Opteron, I can see a pretty good difference. Now I just need to sell off my MSI 6600GT's and get a better card.
