Building a PC

Wow, long time no post eh? Anyway, I've really been contemplating building a PC latley, because from what I've been told it's less costly than buying one because of all the extra fees companies charge. This would be a great solution to my current problem; horrid computer.

Current Specs:

• AMD Duron 750MHz Processor
• GeForce 4 MX 440
• 256 MB RAM
• Looouuud

Now, I was thinking of spending a maximum amount of $2,000 (maybe a few hundred over) if possible to have a decent, and upgradeable gaming PC. I was reading around and saw that 2 GIG's of RAM does wonders, which would be great because games take forever to load (ie: BF1942 3-5 minutes to load into a game). I looked at places online, and I'd like to make something around these specs:

• 1.5 GHz Processor, at least (preferibly 2.0GHz)
• 256 MB GFx card (any kind)
• 1 GIG of RAM, at least (rather have 2 GIG's)
• Quiet

This idea would be even better if I knew how to build a computer. Well, I know how to put in RAM, but that's obvious. I also don't know of the extra parts needed, like the power supply, fans, etc. that would be reliable.

So I was just wondering what would be the best route? If anyone could post prices to parts, keeping in mind I am Canadian, and/or recommend the best setup for me.

I cant be much help to you but i will tell you that you should set your sights higher than a 1.5 or even 2g proccessor. I would think that now a days and with the games to come you should have a minimum of 3ghz. My p4 3.0 with h/t was $290 about 5 months ago.
As i said, not much help but something to think about.

hey i would adise u go to www.cyberpowerinc.com , it is very cheap and for 2000bucks u can get a top notch pc, im talking dual 7800gtx's and a gig of ram and a dual core cpu. its totaly customisable such as neon lights and a bunch of cool cases, i would build off of this system,http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/syst...raslib.asp?v=d, its the cheapest to work off of. i bought my computer from there for about 2200 bucks for my set up and they even come with 3year warranty, and there a almost no wait when u call the support line. but its ur choice.

@wootoow: Hmm, 3GHz would be very nice. That price isn't too bad either. Hmm...

@alphasnail: Well, I went to the site and I must say, wow. The PC I came up with was very nice, sexy green case, and around $1800 with GST, but there's a couple of problems. First and foremost, do they ship to Canada? I checked were it said "Ship to" and couldn't find a thing. Next, the payment options were only credit cards which, even if I had one, I wouldn't want to use anyway.

I'd also rather not order online. Not only because I don't aave PalPay or a credit card, but also because I'd prefer to pay with my debit card and get everything in my hands right away

My brother actually bought this, no complaints yet! 19 inch monitor, runs cod2 maxed out nicely, you get this media center, videos, music, pictures, it looks nice.

Seems to fit in your budget, and you'll still have enough money for an xbox360 w/ a game or 2 lol (just kidding, unless of course you do want it)

(obviously you can find lower prices for this kind of pc, but, this is much less of a hassle, my brother recieved his in 2 days, hooked it up and started playing)

Agian, buying online is an option that I'd rather leave out of the picture. Dell.ca costs more, only takes credit cards, and I still would have to wait for them to ship it to me.

Ok, here's some hints. First, unless it's a laptop, don't buy dell. Second, don't buy intel, unless it's a 9xx and then you have to oc the hell outta to equal a x2 3800+. For a pc nowadays amd is the only way to go.

I've got 3 Dells running in my household and i dont see what the problem is. Why should he be "warned"? I think they're good comps and recommend them to all my friends. Never had a problem and dont see any in the future. So enlighten me if you will, whats so bad about them?

a custom handbuilt pc will outlast a dell, hp, compaq, etc because you will use higher quality pc parts then they will, thats one reason it will last longer

To the original poster, sorry for participating in the hijacking of your thread.
