Re: 2 GIG RAM ** just do it **
i just switched today.
while if you are an athlon 64 user using 4x512 megs, you will have to take a noticeable performance hit since you must reduce the ram command rate froom 1T to 2T, its still worth it overall i think.
after i loaded into a game things would be pretty choppy - for the first minute or two it was practically unplayable, since it would freeze at the most inopportune moments and id get killed either by an enemy or from driving off a cliff or walking off a rooftop due to lag. it wasnt network-related since i ping around 25 on the servers i play on.
after this initial lag i would experience a barely noticeable little lag 'twitch' now and then when i was driving fast into new areas or turning around in a 360 in a city.
now there is no more choppiness. its smoooth as butter from the moment i first spawn on a map to when i hit 'quit'.
ive lost about 5-8 FPS though. this is due, no doubt, to the memory timing issue (2T). in aquamark my CPU score went down by 10%.
on A64 - if you are just building a system or can afford it - i would recommend 2x1024 as opposed to 4x512. some people wont be able to help this, however, since they are on a budget and already have 2x512 sticks. still, its a worthy upgrade - BF2 is a huge improvement, but just keep in mind you will take a performance hit too.
