Ok so im most likely going to get a new computer after vista comes out, and allt he dx10 and am2 is out too. I was just wondering if you can estimate the cost of an am2 processor, motherboar, and ddr2 ram, and then the cost of a dx10 video card. Thanks!

Re: How Much Will am2 and dx10 cards cost
AM2 parts will only be about 5% more than their 939 socket predacessors. I haven't heard about costs of the DX10 cards, but I'd imagine they'd be about the same price range of cards today. I don't think we have to worry about high price increases just because a new socket is released. I think the biggest price changes will be with DDR/DDR2. The price of DDR will go up, and DDR2 will drop.Originally posted by Sir. abjam77Ok so im most likely going to get a new computer after vista comes out, and allt he dx10 and am2 is out too. am2 price= 5 to 10 bucks more than the equivalent mobos today. dx10 cards= same price as the high end ones today. As for the ram, listen to wreck.

cool, is there any other new technology coming out soon (ie new video card slot or a better hard drive connector, or usb 3.0?)

Not in the forseeable future.Originally posted by Sir. abjam77cool, is there any other new technology coming out soon (ie new video card slot or a better hard drive connector, or usb 3.0?)
They need to hurry up and develop some new storage tech. That's the only thing holding back today's computers...

I dont think the first dx10 cards are gonna be very good... im not gonna buy a new card when dx10 comes out im gonna wait till they fix all the problems that dx10 will bring...

^^hmmm, good idea, maybe wait until nvidia 9s or second gen 8s....but then again, they can probably solve a lot of that with drivers too. Also, look at the ATI 9 series, they did incredibly well and were the first dx9 card (i think).

thats what most will say, which is a good idea, and I would even do it myself here's where it will go wrong.
They are gonna make dx10 cards, there will be issues, but they will start making newer cooler dx10 games for vista. They won't release any information about fixing the current dx10 issues, and after a while, everyone will start buying them so they can play the leet games, such as myself because I want to so bad. Then when fixes come around and more, better cards are needed to play, people will have to buy MORE new cards. and they keep raking in the money ^_^. correct if Im wrong but Ive seen it happen before.

What will you have to change when amd2 hits....your mobo,ram,.....Windows Vista if you want it...i know I do! But what will be the real change behind amd2 only the socket?

Initially AM2 will change the socket to a new 940 pin standard, and incorperate a new DDR2 memory controller. This means a new mobo, cpu and ram upgrade all at once. Performance should be within +/- 5% of current s939 chips. The biggest initial change outisde of that will be a bump in the FSB, up from 200mhz to 333mhz and the addition of "virtualization technology" that is almost useless to consumers in the short term.
After about a year+, mid 2007 newer cooler .65nm die shrunk chips will come out. These will be the first version that s939 users will want to look at. The value might not be there even mid 2007, but IMO those chips have good potential as an upgrade path out of s939. The initial chips launching in June 2006 are the same thing you can buy today + DDR2 and virtualization.
