S939 opty were a short term solution to brige the gap to AM2. Once AM2 is out, no more opty's. Any that you can fine new will be outragiously prices due to their rarity.

The opterons were meant to be a budget server solution. You are right they aren't supposed to carry over to AM2, but then again they were never even anounced for socket 939. They just popped up one day out of the blue.

There will always be some "gem" like the opterons for the overclockers. This won't be the last great processor. Don't beat yourself up if you can't afford it now. Just when the time is right for you to buy make sure you read up and do some research so that you get the "gem" at the time you are buying.

                Re: what will opteron do

Hey do only the opteron 100 series overclock like crazy or do the 200 series do too? Because were I buy my pc parts they have only the opteron 142 :|:...but they have almost all the 200 series, i have my eye set on the AMD OPTERON 246 2.00G/800/1M/S940 but dont know if its any good or if it works with my s939 mobo lawl. If everyone new about how opteron a while back everyone would of bought one I know I would of..but now that amd2 is coming out soon i think am dropping the opteron idea..

If it's s940 it won't fit your mobo which is s939. (S stands for socket and I think it's like the fitting for the CPU)

^ Are those the ones with 2mb cache? I'm pretty sure there are some optys with 2mb cache...
