what will opteron do

Guys, i'm thinking off putting an opteron dual core s939 in my comp... because i can get like a opteron 170 dual core or something for 300 euro's... but will this do any good ??? i dont know anything about this opteron's but they're just cool ^^ so will this do any good for gaming ???

Opterons are brilliant because of the overclockability. They may only be at something like 2Ghz but they may OC to FX-60 speeds. And according to some sources an Opty running at 2.6Ghz will get a higher FPS than the FX-60 (2.6Ghz) due to its 2MB Cache.

On my next PC I'm considering getting an Opty and OCing the hell outa' it!

kewl thnx.. and they will go on any s939 mobo right ??? the s939 ones or do you need a special server kind of thing??

Yep they'll go in s939 boards just fine. The 170 is one of the best dualcore s939 optys out, especially for overclocking. Go for it. If I had built an AMD rig, I would've used that same thing.

:) not gonna be soon though.. :P gonna be like another hell 7 months or something before i can get the money :P

By that time, the new AM2 socket from AMD will be out, so u mihgt have to reconsider at that time.

nah i'll wait till the other dual core s939 opteron prices go down :P oh and are all those opterons 64 bit too ??? atleast the 170 dual core or higher ?

Ok, only get an opty if you like to oc, otherwise a normal athlon will work fine. An opty at 2.6 will perform the exact same as a fx-60, and they both have the same amount of cache (1mb for each core). All 1xx optys are 64 bit, and the dual cores start at 165.

In 7 months you probably won't be able to find an Opty new.
