btw, the 6600ddr2 256mb isnt as good as a 6600gt 128mb gddr3. the 6600gt is clocked WAY faster and the memory is better. Though the ddr2 6600 comes close it still isnt as good.

I could play BF2 on a Pentium III 1.0GHz (Thats about a P4 1.6Ghz or so), 383MB RAM (I don't care if you believe me), and a GeForce FX5200.

I got ~20FPS on low settings, but 1024x786. Not bad at all.

A GeForce FX5200 would cost you about $40. I'm assuming you have AGP?

ATi Radeon X1600PRO. Better than the 6600 and damn close to the 6600GT. That card will let you play on Med. settings on 1028x1024. :)

Yea, if he gets a card and leaves a bit of money aside he could get a better CPU and/or more RAM, that would help alot too.

Sure, but he would need a new mobo and new ram to go with it too, which means pci-express next time around also. Which is why he might as well get the 6600gt GDDR3 for $139 from NewEgg.

I wasn't aware they upped the ddr on the GT's also...to 3 insxtead of 2 for the non GT.

I looked again, I cannot find a single 6600 DDR2 in AGP anywhere, only in pci-e.

As much as I like ATI, I still recomend the 6600gt over the x600/x700 series. It is a slightly better card with more features.

He wouldnt need a new mobo, he can upgrade his CPU fine with that mobo and he can easily get more RAM onto it. But yes, the x700 series was a flop.

Sure he could, but considering the socket his current CPU is...it would be absurd to buy a NEW processor for an old mobo...forcing him into yet a longer AGP cycle.
That's why I said he would need a new mobo with it, which would obviously need to be pci-e or it would already be obsolete before he bought it.

What he is doing now, is the last thing he can do with this comp before he needs to replace everything.

He doesn't NEED a new processor. A 9600PRO will be very good for him. Its only $60 and it'll last a while. It'll play BF2 nicely, far from the lowest settings.

After that, I suggest saving up for a new PC.
