If you must go with AGP, keep an eye out for the 7800GS. Unconfirmed performance, but it is supposed to beat a 850XT, but by what, its yet to be said.

If you can go to PCI-E, a 7800GT is better - I keep finding these things for like 300-350ish as of late =) But then you'll probably need a new PSU to be 100% safe...

Correct, but the 7800GS is rumoured to being released as AGP in February. Price and performance between the 6800GS and 7800GT. I'm not aware of Nvidia denying the rumours, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I'd still suggest if the thread starter has £200 to spend now, he considers buying a SLI mobo and a 6800GS. Upgrading to this from a 9800 Pro, he won't be disappointed with the massive performance increase, especially with the extra 1GB of ram he's buying.

If that is the case, and if it is a better card than my current one, I'll be a happy camper. But we will see, it has to have some good benches to impress me to purchase.

I'd say go hunting around, some might be on store shelves, and you could get lucky.

7800GS AGPs are just coming out. Give it time to hit e-tailers and some retail outlets. Someone on hardocp.com got theirs at CompUSA, but also told us only a few manufacturers are doing 7800GSs, so if you got a strong CPU but on AGP, grab one if you want to wait until late 2006/early 2007 (or DX10 cards) to really overhaul...

                    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

My current thinking is to go for an SLI mobo and a 6800 GS. The 7800 is a serious amount of money that I just can't justify at the minute. My understanding is that I can then get a second 6800 GS when I want another upgrade so it should do me for quite a long time to come.

                      Re: Best AGP upgrade

Newegg has a combo sale right now that I've been looking at:

We’re sorry, but this page does not existing. Please visit our home page for more information.

It's an eVGA pci-e videocard and comes with a free eVGA SLi motherboard. The total is currently $360. The problem is, I'm reading bad reviews about both the videocard and motherboard. I've heard of eVGA but since my only experience is with ATI, I haven't really researched them much. I THINK they're good, and maybe the reviews shouldn't throw you/me off. But I dunno. I've been replacing so many parts in my computer and so far nothings fixed my main problems. If I end up going with this combo, I'll post a followup in here about how my switch goes, although you may have already made your decision by then...
