im not going to get expensive RAM. probably going to get another 2 sticks of 512MB. who cares anyways? im not gonna overclock, i just dont give a crap. im after a good performance boost! 2GB to me is the same as 4x512 and 2x1GB they both equal 2GB. so can you people just stop with the "OMFG GET KINGSTON TRIPLE CHANNEL XXMS PC 600."

By splitting up the 2 gigs over 4 ram slots you have increased the amount of available bandwidth to each portion of RAM, thereby speeding up the process.

Its kind of similar to chewing up an aspirin to cause it to work faster in your system. More surface area=quicker something breaks down.

Exactly. Not only does the bandwidth get REDUCED, atleast per DIMM, but you also get the performance hit that MatDef talked about. AND, it takes up more voltage and gives you no room to upgrade.

Dual Channel != 2x the Bandwidth.

Maybe on paper, but for instance the gain shown in Sandra is only about 60%. While this still seems like alot it seems to make a difference in real world apps from 0-10%.

You would also take a 5% loss from running at 2T if you have an AMD. In an Intel system I don't think running 2x1gb compared to 4x512 will make much of a difference.

Which is utter ******** and is another good reason that AMD is not God.

Try testing out a couple Intel based servers with assorted RAM setups and see where you end up.

Well if you have a decent motherboard and a newer AMD core revision then the only hit you will take from filling all 4 DIMMs is the 2T command rate. That is only a 0-5% performance loss, which even with that loss it crushes Intels memory controllers performance. AMD's memory controller is so much faster that you could cut it's performance in half and it would still beat Intel's.
