    P4 Northwood 2.5 vs AMD 3000+ 1.8

Ok ive searched around and I cant seem to find any decent comparisons

    Now my question to you:

How much % better can I expect if I upgrade to AMD?

Well i would say that the 2.5 P4 is equiv to a 2500+ AMD.. thats my guess anyway. So to take it from there, in gaming a fair bit, as AMD's have always had the edge on Intels.

You can overclock the AMD, it will be much, much better.

      Cheers

you should be able to OC that northwood to about 3.0ghz with better cooling. (xp-90)

The athlon would be equivalent to at least a p4 at 3 ghz, so get it. Oc'ed, it'll perform even better.

I agree that the AMD is better, but you can overclock both CPU's.

A P4 2.5 is equivalent to an XP2000 performance wise, they are shiat, as for the XP2500 if yo can get hold of a "XP2500MP" which is the unlocked multiplyer version, they are superb overclockers reaching speeds of 2.2ghz(400fsb) & performing equal to a P4 3.2

I have an athlon XP thoroughbred 1700+ which comes stock @ 1.43GHz, but I have managed to overclock it to 2.42GHz, which is better than a 3.2GHz P4, probably even rivalling a P4 @ 3.4GHz.

Get the AMD, they run faster, and cooler.

You guys comparing your older Athlon XP's to modern P4's...doesn't pan out.

Just because you bumped the mhz up, doesn't put it on equal grounds. You need to be comparing it to the older P4's...which is pointless considering the original posters question.

You're talking about XP's when he mentioned an AMD64...which is 25% faster by same model number than the XP's.
XP3000 25% slower than AMD64 3000...using stock mhz for each.

Don't waste your money buying an older CPU that costs nearly the same as the new ones...when all you need extra is a new mobo for under $100.

The answer is yes, the AMD64 3000+ will be significantly more CPU than what you have now.

                        AMD3000 @ 1.8ghz is an AMD64, specifically a Winchester or Venice(prob Venice).

If he was talking about an xp3000, then it would have been @ 2.2ghz. I used deductive reasoning.

The correct answer is both, you are nuts, and I had a vision... :)
                        .
                        .
                        .
I meant to add to my first reply that he should be looking at the AMD64 3200+ Venice since it costs only $5 more for the ADA3200BPBOX version total $160. The ADA3200CGBOX Venice 3200+ is another $15 more...just a newer revision. Get either one instead of the 3000+.

                        Or an AMD64 3500+ for $201, ADA3500CGBOX

Or for $233 get the AMD 64 3700 Venice, ADA3700BNBOX.

                        All at NewEgg.
                        .
                        .
                        .
                        revisions:
                        BP - E3
                        CG - E4
                        BW - E6

All do the same thing...the newer revisions "might" have tiny little tweaks but nothing that we'd really notice. Consider them like 2nd and 3rd printings of a book.

The latest CG or BW revisions might require a BIOS update on mobos that have been sitting around store shelves for a while...nearly all mobos should support rev. E3/BP with no update at all though.

We both are...the Barton, which I was thinking of...runs at 2.167
Even my old 2800 Barton was slightly over 2.0 :p
