Really? I think you are wrong. DDR2 is just as good for gaiming as DDR. How about you put up some 2-2-2-5 DDR2 400 against some 3-3-3-12 DDR2 667? Or up against some 4-4-4-12 DDR800?

The new socket will natively support DDR2 667 not DDR2 533. It will have an HTT bus of 333mhz and LDT multi of 3x.

Even the DDR2 533 out with 3-2-2-8 timings is enough to crush DDR400 at 1.5-2-2-5 timings.

As a side note, it would be foolish for AMD to release this new socket as there are 1000000's of 939 based 3200-FX57's on the market, talk about cutting your own throat.

That is SO wrong, i saw this with my own eyes, there was a discussion among 2 grad students in my school, one of them said the same thing, at the end, they built 2 computers, same CPU, same GPU, everything same, except one had DDR, one had DDR2, DDR was 400 mhz, DDR2 was 667 mhz, DDR2 beat the hell out of DDR in the game, it affects the net code primarily, then it affects how well your GPU works and how well your DDR3 ram in your video card interacts with the CPU, well long story short, DDR2 memory increased the fps by 10-15 points in BF2, it increased by 20 in doom 3, and it did make more difference in half life 2.

Don't make statements which you don't know much about. Oh btw, those grade students were both researching in computer science, they know a hell a lot more than you, me, and 99% of the people on this forum, just so you know

Then they would know that you can't have the same exact computers and one with DDR and one with DDR2. How is that possible since the platforms for each type of ram don't have a common CPU that they can use? They wouldn't even have the same video card interface unless they used an AsRock. There will really be no way to compare them side by side until AMD's AM2 is released.

I you want to wait for the new socket to come out, you can use the DDR2 RAM and keep those speeds up, although im not sure how good the DDR2 is for gaming. If you do want to get it now, then i would suggest wither the FX-60 (the newest and greatest dual core CPU from AMD), the FX-57 (the "best" single core CPU out there for gaming), or the Operon 167 (i think thats the right number, anyway the one better than the Operon 154). The FX-60 is clocked at 2.6 Ghz, the FX-57 at 2.8 Ghz and im not sure about the Operon, but im sure its around the same amount. The Operons apparently have the best OC'ing but as fasr as i know were actually designed to be for server use.

I would suggest that you just get one of these three, i dont think the wait will be worth it, and the prices of the new socket will be very expensive. However if you are worried about the price, then wait for the new socket then get the FX-60/57 as they will be alot cheaper when the AM2 comes out.

Opteron 180 is 2.4GHz and the 185 (not out) will be 2.6Ghz. There is no opty 167. I wouldn't suggest the flagship products just because of they are grossly overpriced. I like to get 2nd best and overclock it to the speeds of the best. This sometimes saves you 100% of the total cost instead of buying an FX processor.

Actually, he's right. Comparitive AMD proecssors with DDR400 beat similar Intel processors with DDR2-533. Its just a fact that has to do with the Pentium 4 using the Northbridge.

Don't know how it will affect AMD, but I wouldn't be too excited.

No one is arguing that. Thats not a direct comparison of DDR to DDR2. I'm willing to bet because of AMD's onboard memory controller there will be a little performance boost from the added speed of DDR2.
