Question regarding to BF2 performance with AMD CPUs

Alright guys, i have a question that has been confusing me for the last 3 days. First of all my system:

    P4 3.0 Ghz (530) Prescott w/HT
    2 GB DDR2 (667 Mhz)
    Intel DCVX925 MoBo
    7800 GT CO
    Audigy 4
    80 GB SATA

I am thinking of upgrading my system. You may say what's wrong with it, well nothing, i am just doing it just as a hobby. Current 3dmark05 score is 7000 smth i can't remember the exact number.

I want to upgrade my PC to AMD, but i don't know which CPU to buy. I will either get FX-53 OR the new Dual core 64 X2 4800+/2.4 Ghz OR just regular 64 4000+. Now first of all, which one is the best one among all this? Someone with enough information please answer this (with ups and downs). Even though i will be using this primarily for BF2, don't just consider BF2, i am a programmer, i do a lot of C++, Java compile, i do a lot of 3D anti anilising applications, modeling, map making etc.

My other question is, i know DDR2 is not supported by AMD. Now going from 667 mhz ram to a regular PC 3200 (probably 333mhz) ram really bothers me. Does this make a huge difference? Is AMD likely to release a CPU that supports DDR2?

Also, what motherboard do you suggest for these CPUs? Is stock fan good enough? Does it make any noise? (P4's stock fan was HORRIBLE, i now have Zalman's copper fan [its this huge amazing thing that they recently released])

Last question, if i sell my CPU, motherboard, RAM, cooling together, how much would that make on ebay?

Thanks a lot for your time, i am looking forward to your answers.

    Regards,

    Maranello

AMD is about to relase socket AM2 this month that supports DDR2. I'd wait if I were you.

amd is going to end the 939 socket. so yeah its a good idea to wait.

i would like a new processor aswell but since they dont make socket A anymore i would have to upgrade the processor, board and graphics card and i cant afford that now :\

at least i can still play well on medium settings with my 2000+ :P

Id get AMD 4000..it's the best for gaming and price is nice too..currently most of games don't support dual core (in terms of performance)..Unreal 3 Engine will have compability but it's not out yet.

Also, I would not worry about m2 socket..even if it will come out soon, trust me, you would not want to beta-test that socket/motherboard/processor...I say get 939 socket system today...

A moderator posting in the wrong forum, now that's a new one

As for your question. For raw games performance, the single core CPUs are slightly faster than the dual cores. However, this is about to change - as future games will make more use of the dual cores. Also, if you're running a lot of background problems while playing, chances are a dual core will give you better performance even in todays games.
I recommend reading this review at Anandtech, where they compare dual cores to single cores not only in games, but in other apps aswell. What's special in this review, is that they've also got a section covering games performance when multi-tasking.

Unless you want/can afford a FX-55 or 57 (or even the brand new FX-60!), I'd go for a dual core.

PS: Move this to the hardware forum for better replies and less spammers :)

I believe the FX-60 will be the last and most powerful 939 processor. Not certain, but I don't think the dual-core processors offer any increase in BF2 performance. My 3500+ gets pretty much the same framerate as a friend's X2 3800.

If your intending to overclock get an Opteron 170/175 and a thermalright hsf.

About the memory performance im not too clear on memory in general but I remember reading that the onboard memory controller has an effect on it and it isnt such a huge difference between ddr and ddr2, although i could be wrong. But looking at AMD systems coming out on top consistently over Intel for a while, I cant see the ram having a negative effect.

sorry guys. I haven't been sleeping for the past 24 hours, having some sort of family situation, i didn't even realize i posted it in the wrong forum. Moving it to the correct forum right now.

Also, thank you very much for your replies. By the way, i thought FX 53 or more was dual core, isn't that right?

I have also heard that BF2 doesn't recognize the AMD dual core and makes some problems and that you have to do a lot of optimization to get it working.

No, FX-53, 55, 57 - and the last one in the series, the FX-60, are all single cores. The FX-60 is the last CPU AMD will introduce for Socket 939, according to Anandtech.

yours is definitely faster because x2 3800 = two amd 3200s...

Im personally skeptical about dual cores..read the interview with UE3 developer at anandtech. He said that it takes considerable amount of time to tune up game engine for dual cores. It's not something that requires small hack, and you get to use two cores..it's a lot more involved, and might not be cost effective for a publisher..anyway, how many fully 64-bit AAA title games we have today ? only one crappy game which I don't even remember the name of...

Alright, i have been reading some of the reviews and it looks like i am going back and forth between the dual core or FX. I might go as high as FX-60 or 4800+, money isn't the issue here as long as i know for sure that i am getting the best cpu out of that money.

If money isn't an issue, I'd definitely go for the FX-57 or 60 - unless you run a lot of background apps when playing.

After all, when games starts supporting dual cores, and you can see an increase in FPS on benchmarks compared to single cores - you can simply sell the FX and buy a dual core. It probably wont be for another 6-12 months anyway.

Oh, and by purchasing a CPU from the FX-series, you can be SURE that you're getting a good CPU! I'm an FX-user myself, and I regretted the purchase from the moment I pressed the Submit at the online store (seeing as how much money I'd spent).
However, the day I installed it, I haven't look back and haven't had a second of regret - these CPUs are great!
