Recommended GPU temperatures

I read on a forum somewhere that when your GPU core exceeds a certain temperature it affects the performance. I cannot remember the temperature the guy said nor the forum it was on.

So, I ran single player on Oman and looked at the nVIDIA control panel it said 60 degrees C. Later on after some fierce battles I looked at the temps it said 75 degrees C. Are these exceeding the temps I should be having?

I run on stock cooling.

My GPU is usually about 40C at idle and about 55C in the game, though I dont know what is "too hot"

it all depends on the GPU. In the nvidia drivers under tempature it should say Threshhold tempature. That I belive is where performance starts becoming poor. As for your card, and your tempatures, those are normal. My 6800gs' run at idle 40C, and max 58C. That is because my GPU is newer and runs cooler. But 75Cmax is alright. It wont affect performance and wont melt

I think the threshhold is around 120C. I'm not on the nVIDIA PC so it's just what I can remember. But in the box on the right with the lines for how intense the heat is they were in yellow... It's normally around 50-55 idle.

I have a 6600GT and the threshold is 145C, it idles at 38, and when I play bf2it goes up to about 45

Ok, above 80C ur card's lifespan WILL start to shorten. At 90C, it'll basically fry. At 75C i think u will be getting worse performance. Anyways, above 100C is crazy, ur card will be totally dead, 100C equals 212F, that's the boiling temp of water, that is crazy hot. I say get better cooling, or get better airflow in ur case. My GPU runs at 30C idle and 48C load (on BF2) with stock cooling, it's all cause of good airflow.

I increase airflow by changing the fans on the rear of the case?? I don't really know much about cooling. I'll have a look during games like Quake 4 and see if it tops 80C.

Because I was just looking at it when it was 50C and though, OMG that's half boiling temp. Somethings gotta be wrong.

wowzers thats hot... mines 37 idle and 48 load..
and thats oced...

If you guys are hitting over 55 load i would say get better cooling or possibly consider water.

EDIT: im considering water too.. i hear its really quiet.

My stock eVGA 7800GTX is in the mid 50s now at idle and under load its in the upper 70s. Glad my other blocks and mounting hardware are on it's way.

Could you recommend some cooling for my 7800GTX? Silent if not watercooling. I can't really afford a watercooling setup.

Someone else would have to help you there, I only deal with watercooling. A lot more efficient and quieter.

TO get lower GPU temps (and temps all around) do the following:
1) Take all ur components out of the case and get a compressed air can and spray out all the heatsinks and fans.
2) Put them back in, after u do that, arrange ur wires in an ORDERLY fashion, this is to help airflow.
3) If needed, buy new fans to get better airflow, make sure u have as much CFM from ur fans going IN to the case, as going out. In other words, u need cool air to go in, in order for hot air to go out.
4) If still needed, buy a new heatsink for the GPU. I would reccomend the Zalman VF-700-CU.

Ok, thanks. I was looking at overclockers uk at the water cooling. I know nothing about it but would this kit be ok? Because I know people have said not to buy kits as they are overpriced and can't replace individual pieces.
