The 6600GT is better, for all time. Doesn't matter what kind of games. And the "future games" that you're talking about. Well, it won't be able to play most "future games" very well anyways, so you don't need to worry about that.
But for such a low-level card, it doesn't matter if it has 256MB RAM. Any more than 128MB just results in a reduce in performance for the videocard, because its more than the card needs, but more importantly, more than the card can handle. Even with the 512MB 6800GT, it didn't make MUCH of a difference. The card itself needs to be powerful to use the extra RAM. The 6800GT is a powerful card, so it needs 256MB. The 7800GTX is a FREAKIN Powerful card, so 512MB is a huge performance boost for it. But if you gave 512MB to a 6600GT, it would only stall the card.
6600GT 128MB > 6600GT 256MB > 6600 regular 256MB.
