I am looking for some opinions on these two CPU's. Should I go with an AMD 64 FX-55, or an AMD 64 4200+ X2 Processor?

about the FX series, they are a waiste of money, ok they are the extremely fast single core cpu's , but the cost is way to high for what you get, only difirence is they have an unlocked multiplier.
get yourself an 4000+ san diego core , this is the exact same CPU as the FX-53 , but renamed (making it half the price) and it has a locked multiplier (but who cares) and san diego cores have better memory controlers . -

go with the 4200+ or actually the dual core 3800+ which is actually the same cpu the specs except for the speeds then 4200+ is 2.2 and the 3800+ is 2.0 so just buy the 3800+ and pc to 4200+ speeds on air cooling and save the money for something else because the Fx cpu are extremely overpriced so get the 3800+ or 4200+ and u would thanks me later because it a dumb amount of money to pay for a cpuComment

You paid all that money for a 4800 and you're running at stock speeds? lol That's like buying a Vette and never going over 60. lol I have a 4400 running at 2.8GHz and that's a lot better value when you compare how much I paid compared to how much you paid.
Even for gaming, dual core kicks ass. They won't have the best benchmarks, but they are only a few percentage points behind and that's just at stock speeds. Most dual cores overclock nice so you can get a lot of performance out of them. It does take multitasking to a new level.Comment

I just got an Opteron 175 dual running at 2.7Ghz with no problem at all.
I would go for the 4200 X2 If I was you as Dual core is the next step and even more cores.
Also if you can get an Opteron even better.Comment

Like said, opterons are better. U could get a OPteron 154 (FX-57 equivelent) for cheaper than a FX-55 probably. THe Opterons are better processors, they are actually pre-tested by AMD.Comment

Yeah, they are the same except for the clock. I'm saying you can get a chip with bigger cache for the same price. The opterons 939 pin are exactly the same, but with 1M x 2 L2 cache.Originally posted by iceman369
