How long before the 7800gtx becomes obsolete?

Kind of a hard question to answer, it could play any game on high settings, just depends on if it looks good to you or not. nVidia will probably release their new card in Q2.

How long before the 7800gtx becomes obsolete?

      Hey,

I was just thinking of buying a 7800GTX, and was wondering how long do you think it will still be able to play all games on the highest settings?

      Thanks

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Nvidia's release cycle has really slowed down lately. The 6800 series was out for a year, maybe even a year and a half, before the series 7 stuff came out. To my knowledge, the games that are all coming out now are still really only meant to require a series 6. The 7 isn't even close to being in its prime yet. (I'm actually buying a 7800 GT this month.) However, the SLI comment is true. Once the price comes down on the 7's, you can get another one and do SLI. That way you can skip a whole generation.

On the original comment though, your 7800 is going to last you awhile. The general rule of thumb is that if you buy cards a year after they are released, you will be able to play any game out there. Just stay away from AGP. I think it's officially dead now, and I'm building a new machine this month so that I can switch to PCI express.

Don't play the "keep up" game with video cards. Just let the software you want to run dictate the hardware you buy. Also, don't expect the 7800 to run this game any better. This game randomly chooses computers that it doesn't want to work on.

i think it will be awhile, hard to put a time frame on it though, but luckily for us we can now do an SLI configuration instead of upgrading to the lastest new card...

A single card should last 9-12 months. 2 should go up to 18months, hence why I got 2. From all the reports, the only thing holding back the gtx at the moment is the processor. So before we have games that can take advantage of the vid card completely, we'll need better cpus first. No it won't be the best, but it should hold you over for a while. Heck, last Nov I bought an X800 and I could play all the games on high with all the eye candy on until now and that wasn't a top of the line card then either. You can't go wrong with a GTX right now.

I'm now thinking of buying 2 7800GT's, how long will this last me do you guys think? After both of the GT's become obsolete i'll buy the new card coming out next year.

I'd give it about 6-9 months before you won't be able to play on all high with a good frame rate (above 60fps). These cards are already struggling with games released this year alone. Just for reference imo a good card should be able to run a game on all high with above 100 fps.

A few months after I bought BF1942 I purchased a 9700 pro. It ran the game on all high 4xAA, 8xAF with well over 100fps.

                  U can't even see the difference above 30fps y'know. U don't need 100FPS in a game lol.

You are confusing tv methods of display with computer monitors. I can tell the difference below 60fps. You don't need 100 fps, but I sure as hell expect it out of a $750 card . My post isn't about what you can play at or see, but my own expectations of what you should get for your money.

By the way just for reference the 9700 pro which was the baddest card of it's time was only $399 while today a card that doesn't provide the same performance/price ratio on BF2 costs $750. This is almost double the price for less relative performance.

Same here, i would expect that too outta a 750 dollar card (GTX 512mb). Anyways, maybe it's just me, or my monitor (like 20ms response time) is the reason that i can't se the difference above 30 fps.

You can't tell for sure. Look at some reviews etc..

I bought one 7800GT and I overclocked it. Runs BF2 on full settings wtih 4AA, with on average 100FPS. Also runs Hl2 at around 90 FPS and runs Loast Coast demo at around 90FPS as well. So for me one 7800GT is plenty.
