i know amd is better for games compared to intel but would it really make a noticable difference if i got a pentium 4 3.4 ghz instead of an athlon 4000+?

Yes. I have a 3.4 and I'm switching to an AthlonX2 3800+ because I have been so disappointed in my performance.

Yes, the 4000+ will be much, much better than that pentium.

P.S. I was at a lan party a week ago, and we were paying BF2, guy next to me had a 4000+ and 2 gigs of ram, forgat what card, anyways, i was only like 3 to 4 seconds max behind him getting on the maps, now the difference would also probably be, that if we had the same video card, he would be getting higher FPS

Oh and kindofchaos, if you going with a 3800X2 you will probably loose performance compare to a 3.4 P4, a 3800X2 is like having 2 3000+, remember BF2 is not optimised for dual core so you would probably wont see any improvements on the game, i am almost positive.

First off, i dont care where he works, numbers are numbers, and is the true, the 3.4 is better for gaming than a 3800X2, that's all i was saying, go look it up if you dont believe me, and if he does work on that industry he would say it himself. Now i see why your name is jackass, lol j/k. No but really, gaming wise a 3800X2 cant touch a 3.4

I had a amd 3200xp and then changed it to a P4 3.2 which id say i got about a 10% increase in bf2/sf and 3d studio max got faster render times.
I have access to pc hardware and now i changed it to a amd 64 3200 and im getting about 25% increase over the P4 and faster render times. Id go with the AMD.

Actually thats false. The loss in performance USED to be true, however AMD has released a patch that fixes that. On top of that you can set Affinity with the dual cores and tell the computer which programs will use which cores. In this case, I will have the primary core running the Windows based operations since most programs default there anyways, and the secondary core running the game. Thus meaning I will have an entire core at 3800+ (stock might I add, I will probably OC) running BF2.

However if you compare AMD's single core to their dual core, then this is correct. Here is proof:

The highest P4 3.4Ghz is an Extreme Edition processor. As you can see it only has a 7 FPS difference in far cry. Since we didn't speak of EE then I will be getting a performance boost.
