I'm building a new PC and was wondering how good this Proc. is for BF2?
It will be working with:
7800 GTX
2gb

I have a 4400+ oced to 2.8GHz. I heard the 3800s oc nice too.

It will be good, but technically speaking you could get a single core higher speed processor that will do better for gaming. However if it is an all purpose machine, I would say go for it!

I'd get an Opteron 939 with 1Mb L2 cache instead. I have the 170 at 2.8Ghz daily, but it can hit 3Ghz and stay in windows long enough to get some screenies....

939 optys are pretty much the same, except they are cheaper, they all have a 1mb l2 cache, are more thoroughly tested before they are shipped out, are usually cheaper, and oc extremely well.

That's a hard choice I'm having when thinking about my next processor. I really want a duel core but have been reading on Newegg and here that they aren't the best for gaming. I realize that the duel core isn't taken advantage of, but I guess the single core in use just isn't as good as a standard single core? I do lots of multi tasking and mainly I want to be able to record tv (once I get the card) while playing demanding games like BF2. Is there no duel core good enough for gaming? By good enough I mean kick@ss of course =P

If they're backed with a solid graphics card and RAM, the X2s from 3800+ and up do nicely in gaming. They just won't do quite as good as other single cores. They are by all means good enough for gaming, and if you plan to record TV and game at the same time, then an X2 will likely more than get the job done for you.

Yeah, I'm just not sure if doing that one particular multitask is worth having, say, a $500 processor that peforms like a $200 when gaming. If I pay $500 on a processor I don't want to feel like it's time to upgrade anytime soon =P

But i'm perfectly willing to pay that much if it does everything that I want it to.

Don't worry. You won't feel like you need to upgrade any time soon. And then when games start hitting the shelves that fully support dual core, you'll even have an edge.

I have a 4400+ overclocked to 2.8GHz and I score a 30.1XX on 1MB SuperPI test. That is a great score. The FXs are around the same if not higher. You will not be disappointed in a dual core. And the difference in a stock dual core and the equivalent single core is only a few percentage points.

I'm still trying to fit my head around AMD frequencies. With Intel the more you spend the faster the processor; traditionally. I've been told that the 3200+ of my venice means that it's about equal to a 3.2ghz Pentium 4. But it runs at 2.0ghz stock and overclocks pretty easily to 2.4 (keeping my memory at a stock 400mhz) or 2.5 (overclocking memory by approx 4%) on my mobo. But a 4000+ Clawhammer runs at 2.4 stock and the only other difference is a 1mb cache instead of 512 and it's about $150 more. But aside from the cache difference, I really doubt my 2.4 is the same as it's 2.4. And a duel core is generally 2.2/2.4

I try to just tell myself to ignore the first number, go by the second number (4000+). Then things like HL2 Lost Hiway come along and say you need at least x.x ghz...
