How to overclock your Nvidia Graphics Card -- No extra software required --

After seeing a few posts about this I decided there needed to be a thread about this so here it is.

Overclocking is a great tool when used in reason. Overclocking will void your warrenty and cause damage to your system and parts. However if you use this great little feature that Nvidia covered up you should have no problem.

So how do you overclock your graphics card. Read bellow.

    Start>Run>type regedit

Opens panel, and you navigate through the subfolders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/NVIDIACorporation/Global/NVTweak/

Then right click on the right pane of the editor => add new DWord "coolbits" => Edit and give it hexagonal value "3" => close registry editor. Then go to the Nvidia icon at the system tray icon, go to Nvidia display, then click on the name of the monitor.

Thats what my optimal settings are.

I think its pretty safe to use the optimal settings, I put it a little under the optimal setttings and I have had no problems and noticed a serious increase of power playing BF2.

Hope this has helped and if you think this deserves a sticky great,

Let me address some people in this post

Death Merchant: You have the same card as I do, overclocking it to the specs I have in the picture work fine for me. If you do the tutorial you can press find the optimal clock speeds and it will automatically find the optimal clock speeds for you.

Jackass: Nothing is illegal on my desktop, Limewire so far is a legal program as long as you use it for things that have a shared license. DAEMON is also legal, and I only use it so I don't have to put in my disk all the time. I'm making a tutorial on that as well.

Make sure it got a hexaglonal value, you put the string in the right place, with your comp it should work...Follow the tutorial exactly as its posted and it will work.

                  Nice computer by the way,

Coolbits isn't even software...it's just changes a registry value. It does this exact same thing as this.

warning: you can really mess your up gfx card up by doing this. Only do this if you know what you are doing. Start OC by 5% increase and play with it for awhile to make sure it won't over heat or crash.

For my XFX 7800GT I got:

                        484 for Core Clock Freq
1.12 for Memory Clock Freq (Seems very common)

But I'll leave it with no overclocking for now, I need more RAM not more MHz & GHz. :p

If you use the detect optimal settings you should be fine, if you want to be over causcious turn it down from thier. Overclocking is a great tool just use common sense and you will be fine.

                            i wouldn't use that.

There is a certain procedure to discover your card’s maximum overclock without damaging your card. Keep in mind, overclocking does void the warranty on your card, so do it at your own discretion. To find the maximum clock, you have to understand that there are two parts to overclock - the core, and the memory. Overclocking the core too much can result in lock ups, crashing, and artifacts. Overclocking the memory too much can result in artifacts. Artifacts include white specks (snow), texture flashing, and screen flicker.

To start overclocking, choose the Manual Overclocking option. Auto overclocking dynamically adjusts the rates based on the application intensiveness and the temperature of the card, and an option I don’t suggest using. Make sure you set Setting from Standard (2D) to Performance (3D). You don’t want to change the 2D clock settings.

You’ll want to overclock your card slowly, do not go in excess of 10mhz. I recommend testing in 10mhz increments. Up the clock frequency on the core and memory 10mhz, hitting Test Changes each time to see if the card accepts the new clock. Keep doing that until you get told you overclock too high. Note the last clock frequencies that you go to without an error, and move it down 5mhz.

Note: NVIDIA includes a Detect Optimal Frequencies to find the optimal clock for you. Although it may seem a convenient feature, it seems to be random and not entirely accurate. I don’t suggest using this option.

So if this is true than don't use detect optimal settings. But I would just to see what is gives you and if its way off take a screenshot and post it here.
