x850 XT PE Bottleneck

Here's my specs:
AMD Athlon XP 3200
2GB PC2700 2.5 333mhz
Visiontek Xtasy x850XT PE AGP8x @ 594mhz/1230mhz
400w PSU
160gig 8mb Seagate HD

Here's the problem, when I try and play BF2 at 1280x1024 all high 6xaa, my FPS stays in the low 20s. This causes me to stutter in 32/64 player games. According to Windows, I'm only using 1.25gb of ram in total and 100% of my CPU resources. So is my CPU bottlenecking my 850xt? :hmm:

Update: I set my video settings to 800x600 all low AA/shadows/etc off. Still got a consistent 20-30 fps. I use FRAPS and the console fps command to monitor my frames.

Well considiring a 7800GTX 256mb gets 50-70FPS with 4xAA that aint suprising.

Put that AA down to 2x and you will see MUCH less stuttering. 6xAA is overkill.

Your CPU might be doing something. But just pick up a ASUS A8V deluxe and AMD 64 3200+.

The CPU and especially your 333Mhz ram is holding back your X850 card. I recommend that you turn everything to medium except texture filtering at high and antialiasing at 2x and work your way from there.

I think it's the ram, you shouldn't get 1.25 gb of ram, get 1gb, or 2gb. Also, i play on 1024x1280 all high with 16xAF and 6xAA and i run with 60FPS unless in heavy firefight situations.

Guys, I doubt its the RAM.

PC2700 and PC3200 are slimilar, I could play medium 2xAA 1024x768 no problem with my p42.4 1GB PC2100 and 9800 pro.

I just took a look at my psu and it said 12v/17a. The PSU itself should provide enough power to my pc. Also, I got 2gb of ram, just 1.25gb is being used by Windows/BF2/etc.

What gets me is that when I set my resolution to 800x600 with everything on low/off, I get 20-30fps. According to Anandtech and Firingsquad, I should be seeing FPS' over 70. I mean, wth can it be? I'm off to try and disable my SB Live! It's pretty old and maybe it's putting a strain on my pc.

I think its your power supply. That AMP is pretty low.

People say 18A on the 12V is enough for a 9800 pro.

How much have you got to spend? Give me a budget and Ill find you a good PSU. Even if its not the case, at least you have a good PSU to use in future builds/upgrades.

Just 12v, I'd hate to spend more money. I spent 320 on my graphics card and got sluggish frames. So then I spend another 90 on a stick of ram and I'm still getting bad frames.

A PSU under 50 would be nice.

It has good dual +12v ratings. BUt i don't guarantee that it will work great, as it is not from a trusted brand like Antec or OCZ. But if you get one from a trusted brand, it costs 50 bucks just to get 350w psu with single +12v rail.

BF2 is CPU dependant, not gfx.

Try keeping your settings maxed, but play in 1024x768

No man, the GPU is everything, cause actually the GPU bottlenecks the CPU. SO a let's say 3200+ wouldn't bottleneck the GPU until we start making like 32 pipeline cards with clock speeds of 1000/2200 or something like that. BUt by that time, like a 5800+ will come out. In BF2, there is a big difference between a 6600GT and 2x512mb 7800GTXs. BF2 is for our time, gfx card dependant.

I have problems with bf2 the day a bought my x850xt pe. Before that I was using an ati 9800pro and everything worked great. With the x850xt pe I get stuttering. Now, you should think that it's your x850xt pe that's causing the problemes but that isn't so. I have done a research a whole month because I'm very ****ed that I'm not able to play bf2 with my config.
When you play with an 9800 pro you can't use all setting to high so you use all medium video settings. With those medium setting bf2 will use less than 1GB Ram. With a x850xt pe you are able to play on everything high 1280x1024 and 6xAA. There is no doubt about it. But with these settings bf2 will use 1.3 to 1.5GB of Ram. There are many people who have this problems with 1GB Ram and when putting another 1GB, there problem is solved. I have found that bf2 is not using the whole 2GB but only 1GB and the rest is swapping. Why do I think It's your Ram? Just set your AGP aperture in the bios to 256 instead of 64. With this setting you are forcing bf2 to use more Ram. Also I think it's your Ram that's holding you back because it's to slow.
Just let me know if changing your agp aperture to 256 has made any difference. Sorry for my bad English

FSP is one of the best brands out there mate :).
