Could this be a power supply issue?

I installed the 7800GT today and everything starts going slow and crashing. My 6800GT was fine in the current setup. Its a truepower(?) 420W with an 18A 12V rail.

I have the items below +2 IDE Hard Drives, 2 optical drives, a floppy drive, A network card, a TV tuner, about a dozen USB devices, and a case fan. Could the 7800 be overloading the power supply and causing these problems? If so, what wattage should I get? Or is it the low amps on the 12V?

    Anyone have an opinion?

7800's if I recall require 24 or 26A on the 12v line, on a true PCI-E PSU according to nvidia requirements, in addition to a 450 Watt PSU.

That calculator says I need a 378 under 100% load. Could the lack of Amps on the 12V rail be causing the problems? My voltages are actually optimal:

        +3.3V: 3.41
        +5V: 5.19
        12V: 12.28

So its not overburdened with 420 Watts.

Lack of amps could definitely cause you problems, however the 7800's are supposed to require fewer amps than the 6800's did. With the arm's length list of components you're trying to power i would go with nothing short of a 500watt PSU.

          What drivers are you using?

You really think that PSU is pushing out 378watts continuous? You have to be kidding me. A generic 420 watt is lucky to put out 250watts continuous under normal gaming circumstances. Don't be fooled by the 420watt "maximum" output rating under Ideal conditions with lower than expected temperatures.

Thats weird because I never had any problems with problems with the 6800GT. A lot of people on the XFX forums are getting the same problems and I bet its a crappy power supply. Today I unplugged one of the 4 pronged power connectors to the VGA and disconnected one of my optical drives and its running good enough to post on here from the problem computer.

His is from ANtec, the Truepower line, which is good. So it's not generic. BUt i agree, generic PSUs SUCK, my first PSU on this comp had 15a +12v rail, died after 2 months lol.

The old Antec truepowers may as well be generic. They suck with the new AMD 64 systems, and weren't designed to run them. He may be lucky to get 300 watts continuous out of that PSU. I owned a True Control 550 watt that died on me almost as soon as I hooked it up to my first AMD 64 system. What I had at the time was:

                  AMD FX 53
                  MSI K8 Neo2 Platinum
                  1Gb G.Skill PC4400 2.5-3-3-7
                  ATI X800 XT PE
                  Antec True Control 550

Oh, i just had people saying that truepowers were good a bit ago (like 4 years ago, they were all using P4 though). But now i hear that the truepower 2.0 (they have 2 +12v rails) are good (although expensive).

Right, they were great for P4 systems at the time. There is a reason there is a Truepower II. It's because they had to redesign them to work well with the new A64's. There were threads about these PSU's dying on the 64 systems all last year about this time. There was a mass exodus from Antec, and alot of people started buying the OCZ and PC Power and cooling PSU's like I did.

Yeah, i have to admit, the problem with new tech for pcs (besides price) is the increasing power usage and power demands. After i bought my new PC, my electric bill went up a little, as i went from a SOny with P4, radeon 9200, and 300w psu, to a AMD 64 3200+, X800XL, and 500w Antec SmartPower 2.0 psu.

EDIT: and btw, have you seen teh pc power and cooling 1kw psu, it's crazy, and so is it's price.

Agreed, though I'm not sure how anyone could use that much power.

Well I just bit the bullet and got a rosewill PSU. Yeah yeah, go on about how horrible it is. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182015

450Watts and two 12V rails totalling 33A. Hopefully should fix my troubles.
