Depends on what you put on high. I would turn dynamic shadows off cuz they suck. BF2 decided to put lego shadows in the game. Then I'd put dynamic lighting on low/medium. The rest you should be able to turn up to high @ 1024x768.

There is a new card from Nvidia the 6800 GS at around $200 that is equal with a 6800 GT in BF2.

The processor you have there, the 2800+ is fine, think about upgrading the vid card. I play all high with 6xaa and 16xaf with my setup below. It runs at a average 60fps, and if i'm running arround looking at the ground (it actually is very complicated when you're running, as it requires extreme detail as it is very close to where you are lookking at) i get like 30-35fps. Proccessors don't bottleneck very much in BF2, maybe they will in FEAR though.

EDIT: It's only never above 60 fps because it's like capped there. If it wasn't, i'd be getting like 65 fps, not much, but it is a difference. ALl my games are capped at 60fps, i'm not sure whats wrong, but i don't care, 60 fps is when the naked eye can't see any frames at all, and that's with a REALLY good eye. I can't see the difference between lets say 35-45 fps.

people are forgetting about the ram...this game is a ram hog and to run high, 1.5-2.0gb of ram is also needed to do it...without studdering.

since BF2 is NOT CPU sensitive AT ALL, I would say with a 6600GT you could do 1024x768 on high but, textures on medium (unless you have 2 gigs) just fine. This game is all about your GPU and RAM. 6800GT and 2 gigs you could be screamin. Go to tweakguides.com ands check out their BF2 tweak guide because it has screenshots of how all the different settings differ.

Not quite sure, it should either be an option in bf2, or your ati control panel.

Dude, You ain't gonna see much difference playing 1280x1024 from 1024x768. Its just a resolution and monitor makes it all the difference. I have a 17 FTP monitor and i think i run at 1152x864 with all high and AA 6x just because its a lot smoother and flawless than playing at 1280x1024. I could play 1280x1024 maxed out with my settings, but it won't be smooth as 1152x864. That decision was totally depended on Graphic Quality. They were the same. That's why i went lower with my resolution.
