an AMD 64 4400+ and a 7800GTX

read up on overclocking, there is only 200mhz difference between the 4400 and 4800!

Actually the fastest gaming CPU is a Pentium M running at 2.6Ghz. Runs faster than an FX57.

Runs faster or benchmarks better? Intel did a great job with Pentium M, and my guess is we will see that architecture or something similar in the Pentium X series. I have a Pentium M in my laptop running at 1.7Ghz and it is just as fast as my 3.4 system. So hopefully Intel stumbled onto something good to become competitive with AMD again because right now they are getting it handed to them.

These suggestions are great, but realistically, who would pay $900-$1200 for a cpu, and another $800-$900 for 2 videocards? I doubt many younger gamers would have that kind of money to spend.

ATM, it's either 2xevga 7800GTX KOs, or Asus 7800GTX extreme (i think that's what it's called, it has an arctic silencer on it already, pre-overclocked). CPU, for gaming, obviously a s939 FX-57, for multitasking and stuff like that+gaming, the 4800+ X2
