INTERNET. Not internate. And I am absolutely confused, you said you bought new ram and a new video card and you want to upgrade it's processor...but what I don't understand is why you would do all of this if you don't even have a CD drive or have a connection to the internet.

Oh lord no, a Dell is the last thing you should ever buy!!! Built it yourself, it is NOT that hard and will be far better then anything you buy pre built.

no disrespect, but i doubt this guy has even the basic knowledge in which to build a pc. i agree its easy to do (but ive upgraded since 486's and Voodoo2's), but when you dont even know your sockets from your pci slots its no walk in the park! if you do choose to get into building or upgrading, please please go find/buy a pc building bible, the satisfaction from creating your own gaming rig is tremendous, plus you know it inside out and problems are easier to fix

If it has a Socket A chip in it, then the best CPU you can buy for it is an AMD Semperon Socket A 3000+, i think... That runs at 1.8 Ghz, but you can OC it easily enough and its the equiv of a P4 3.0.... So good luck.

And dont buy a pre made system, they crarge you alot more, you have easily take 1/4 off the price by building it your self.

His board most likely won't support that. Just because it's socket A doesn't mean any socket A CPU will work, the FSB has to match up.

I dont know the exact tye of Mobo he had so i gave the best A socket there was, which would be the best he could hope for, if he couldnt suport that the obviousally he would have to go lower.

Ok, I was looking and browsing at all this post. I never herd of an AMD3700xp for one.

The other is if you are going to upgrade, then do it right and get something that you are going to be able to ugrade off of later too. Like get a good motherboard. One that will take a AMD 939 or 940 processor basically the AMD 64 the socket type has to match. & years old is old and the video card might even be intergraded into the mobo and that just plain sux. I build systems for a living almost and go to college the rest of the time while working as a computer repair guy at the local computer shop. No offense to the topic starter, but theres NO way hes gonna get a pc built. At this point, i don't think he even knows he IS ON the "internate"

If you do insist on building, like stated before, get a book.... or something

alright first of all I cant spell
2nd of all the computer i am trying to upgrade(eMachines) was given to me by my uncle because he was getting a new computer(the pc was oringally used for billing so its not very good)
3drly (if thats a word) the cd drive was broken so I replaced it with a new one but just recently the cd drive for my good computer broke. So since the computer that my uncle gave me was just collecting dust I took the cd drive from there.
4thly there is no INTERNET on the old emachines becuase whats the point of having the INTERNET on it if its to slow to do anything on.


and I didnt buy the vid card and ram I just know what I am buying.

The socket A sempron 2800 actually is a 2.0 ghz over the 3000 witch is a 1.8 weird huh? Semprons are better than xp versoin cause xp are known for burning out.

No semprons are better because they have a better architecture and on-die mem controllers. I've never heard of an XP "burning out" whatever you meanby that.
