Buying and installing CPU, plz help

alright I am updating my old slow computer and I bought a new vid card and more ram, so all I need is more cpu. The pc has AMD but I heared there are differnt types of AMD(Venice and 64), does it matter which one I get, and will I need a new fan or something because someone was saying that it can overheat if you upgrade the cpu without getting a fan to match its speed.

I am lost plz help

When you say 'old' can you be more specific? What are your system specs.
Yes there are many different AMD (or Intel) processors and it makes a difference as to which one you buy. All processors nowadays need cooling. Unless you buy an OEM processor the processor you buy will come with a heatsink and fan.

I bought the XP64 3700+ San Diego, was the best bang for buck imo. The 1mb L2 cache of the San Diego core makes for sweet gameplay... If your going to upgrade though, be sure you have the correct socket motherboard!!?

Doen't the 64bit require a different mobo?, if he's got an "Old" AMD, wouldn't it be wiser to go with a 32bit proc.?

What is your price limit, I'll find you the best for your price range. It's important we know what socket motherboard you have, to find this out download Everest and it'll tell you everything about your computer.

PLEASE PLEASE read something about this dude, you can't just walk lightly into buying this crap. First ask yourself what socket your motherboard has. Then ask yourself what your BIOS will support. Then read or watch something on how to install a CPU because those things are soooo fragile you break ONE pin by mistake and its dead.

the pc is about 7yrs old
specs
256mb DDR RAM
I dont know what the vid card is but its not good enough to run bf1942
AMD 1600 + Anthlon tm XP(I copied that right off the pc and I dont know what it means)

Price limit- I am not sure becasue I am upgrading the pc for my cousin but just keep in mined he is buying this stuff on a MCdonlas pay check :laugh:
and I want at least 2.0 ghz so it can run bf2.

will installing cpu be as easy as installing a vid card?

You really should read up some more or watch videos before installing a cpu, althought its easy... it's just as easy to break something. CPUs pins are very fragile and you will not get a refund if u break em. I really suggest you know what ur doing before you install a cpu and heatsink.

Do what I told you, download Everest. Google it, it will tell you what socket you have. That is VERY important, because you could buy a CPU that won't fit in your motherboard. We can't help you unless we know what we are supposed to be looking for.

What he said. I can tell you, with that old a board, and current processor, it aint gonna make much difference. You may want to post a spending limit, and let us help you in a direction.

You mobo is socket A. No sence in upgrading it as I suspect it only supports 133FSB. And you really need to do some reading before you start with this stuff. Your going toend up breaking something and/or wasting alot of money.

as far as "pins" go go for the new intel procs they dont have any pins for you to risk bending.. much less chance of screwing it up too ,and the heatsink/fan goes on any which way, it doesnt only go on one way like the amd, and if u get the new intel chipset you can get the procs with 2MB L2 cache, 800fsb...the prices for the new intel stuff is rediculously cheap now (especially for intel)...

theres only one problem with that I dont have the internate on that pc, and it has no cd drive. It is also to big to fit on a floppy disk

let me explain whats going on here, my cousin has a 15 yr old computer ther is no way he can run bf2 on that. So I am going to upgrade one of my pc's which has been sitting on the floor for a year and give it to him.
