so far ive built ever single computer ive ever owned (with the exception of my iMac) and i dont mind the process of putting it all together and shopping and all that crap. and id think that most moderatly expierenced computer geeks would agree that the added 'hastle' of doign it urself is generally worth it rather then pay all the extra money for a premade system, as alienware setups are generally cost like twice what the individual parts cost.

not to mention that those stats from alienware are a bit biast :P

I've had my system for a while, so mind you this is when it first came out. And I bought everything and didn't swap anything from my other computer. $3000 was a rough estimate, my parts were about $2500 or so, but I've added on since then. So here is my current config:

how longs 'a while' tho? my pentium 4 3.6ghz processor was £260 when i bought it more than 4 months ago and its still the same price now, some prices dont always drop that much that soon

alienware does have bad A$$ comps but way over priced. Actually the Army used the laptops for missle guideing and stuff related. I am a A+ certified tech and am in college to get a degree to back up that certification. I will say that building a comp is wasy it is the overclocking that takes skill. Yes you have to research a little to make sure every thing is compatible, but that aint hard either. No, offence here but you sound like an Alienware rep! Check out my comp on ebay and tell me it aint attractive compared to an alienware! auction number 6809886015I can make that computer dual core for like 3-400 hundred more than the reserve of 1200. Buy an alien ware that is half that computer and your paying 3000.00 later.

My first PC (386 SX 25) was a pre build. The first thing I did when I bought it was take it to pieces and find out what everything was. After that, I asked people for their old broken PCs when they upgraded and figured out how everything went together.

WHen it came to upgrading my PC, I knew everything I needed to do a self build and after a few little problems it ran like a dream. Ever since then I've self built. ITs getting a little more complex and you do have to do a lot of research into what you are going to use and where best to get the parts from, but the sense of satisfaction you get the first time it boots is well worth the time spent building it.

yeah... thats ok ALIENWARE ****ING SUCKS BIG ANUS!!! i am 16 years old and i bought my own 1600 doller comp everything was seperate and i put it together with no problems at all. and my case looks bas ass(aspire w/7fans) so dont be giving this generic grey ********, everyone thinks that alienwware is the best and it is justa plain freakin ripoff. go to ( www.newegg.com ) they are much better than alienware BS. so for all you alienware freaks out there. shutup!!! alienwar sucks!!!. lol

Because of this post, I've also given up my hobbies of playing the guitar and painting. I just realized I can simply buy CDs and pictures painted by other artists and save myself a ton of time and concentrated effort!!

I'm broke now, of course. But I have lots more time for sitting on the couch and not learning or accomplishing anything.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!

If you think that try reading through the client support section on this forum. Building a computer is about more than putting the pieces together. It's also about configuring the BIOS, installing Windows and drivers and making shure it is all stable. Even today some motherboards will have problems with some memory modules, some graphic cards will not operate properly in some motherboards etc..

I have built PC's since the early 90's and I still put together my own stuff. I also spend a lot of time helping others with their homebuilt PC's. My brother experienced the following a week ago: His PC would not start and the motherboard reported that something was wrong with the CPU. (He has a DFI Lanparty UT NF4 SLI, 1GB OCZ Platinum, AMD 3500+, 7800GT, watercooling, Thermaltake powersupply) All very expensive and quality parts.

After he tested what he could he discussed it with me and we both concluded that the motherboards error message about the CPU was bogus and that it was infact the motherboard that was dead. He sent the motherboard back to the webshop, they tested it and claimed that the mobo was ok. He then decided (thinking that it was the CPU after all) to order another CPU and get RMA on the one he had. He did not want to be without a PC so he borrowed one from me in the mean time but it's not a gaming rig so he wanted his running again asap.

When he got the new CPU and his old motherboard back (he had to pay a fee to the webshop since they tested the mobo and it was ok) he installed them in the PC and everything seemed in order. Later that night the same crap happened again. The motherboard would not start and it showed the same stupid led claiming something was wrong with the CPU. So our initial thoughts where right, it was the motherboard after all. So he had to send it back again to get a new one, for the 2nd time. The shipping costs about $17. When he finally got a new motherboard everything was now working fine but the next day the Thermaltake powersupply (which he paid about $185 for) died. He now had to RMA that and in the meantime he had to borrow the one in the PC I lent him.

This incident is not unique, I could list many more.
