    7800GTX having FPS issues...

(Hi! My name is alpha... long time listener, first time caller....)

I have been running BF2 on my 7800GTX for a few days now, and i suspect something is up with the FPS i am getting.

At times, i'm getting something around 40/60... but at certain times, it's dipping as low as 15/20 and just staying there... at no times do i see the reported consistant 60-100fps... (how do you read the fps anyhow, what is #A/#B ?)

I've ran through multiple optimization guides - such as IGN and Tweakguide... no luck.

    I run the following setup:

    Hardware
Mobo: Asus A8N-SLI Premium (using onboard audio currently)
    CPU: A64 3700+ SanDiego
    Ram: 2GB OCZ 3200 Platnium
    HDD: 74gb WD Raptor SATA
    GPU: eVGA 7800GTX
    PSU: Seasonic S12 600W
    LCD: Dell 1901FP @ 60hz
Cooling: Swiftech Apex H20 Watercooling w/ Maze4 GPU

    Temps
    Idle: CPU - 34 / GPU - 35 / System - 38
    Load: CPU - 39 / GPU - 40 / System - 40

    BF2 Settings
    Video: 1280x1024 @ 60hz - 2x AA, High settings on everything else
    Audio: Hardware-Medium - Onboard A8N
    Network: Cable or better

    Display Drivers: nVidia 78.01
    Chipset Drivers: nVidia 66.66
    Mobo Firmware: Asus 1007

The onboard sound on the Asus A8n isn't very great, so i have gone ahead and ordered the X-Fi Fatal1ty... it is in the mail.

I will also be replacing the Dell 1901 with a Viewsonic 19" VP191B... so that I can run BF2 at 75hz...

But the fact is that even at 60hz with onboard audio, i should not be having this much of a problem with FPS... even if it stayed consistant at a lower 40-60fps - i would be happy... but the fact of the matter is, very often, i see 15-18 in that #A number... and i know something is up...

    Any ideas?

What are you on about intels processor sockets? or you just a real jackass? hes running AMD (754 or 939) anyway in reply to the original poster alpha mate, what drivers are you running should be 77.77 also latest mobo drivers, what 3dmark05 score do you get, i had only 30-60 (mostly 40) with 2 of those cards, i found that my Intel P4 3.6 (775LGA) was a huge bottleneck for these cards the cards can handle it but the cpu cant, 3dmark05 would give me a score of 8300 now i get over 3000 more points with a better processor, costly but i spent so much on both 7800's that i had no choice to spend more.

Try turning your sound to software, because you can't really tun hardware with onboard sound. See if that makes a difference.

Also, do some research on your power supply...you need at least 26 Amps on the +12V rail to run the GTX at full power, as I found out the hard way...I still need a new PSU because I only have 24 Amps on it. If you don't have 26, try getting a new power supply...and let me know if it makes a difference

Are you kidding me, im tired of people saying the CPU bottleneck ********, all the time, maybe if he had like 2.0 chip maybe, but even then it would not be a big problem, something is wrong with you system. How about virus????? like someone mentined also drivers???? background operations on your system. Look at me specs and my FPS varies, but like if im flying and all i see is like sky i get 98 but when flying and looking at the ground with alot of stuff happening i get like 45. Something is up with your system, cause it sound like a good one.

CPU actually does bottleneck a GPU, just not very much in this game. It's gotta be something, but I have the same problem he does and I have 15 processes running (that includes BF2 and FRAPs) and I run weekly spyware/adware programs, disk defragments, disk cleanups...so I don't know what the problem is. It's gotta be his power supply, and I'm hoping that's all it is for me.

An AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and up will not bottleneck a 7800GTX. I can't remember where the damn link is, but it's been tested. The 3700 is definitely not a bottleneck or issue at all. First thing I'd do is set sound to Software, Low, EAX off. See what kind of difference that makes. Don't use Hardware with onboard sound. Second, although I haven't found this in my case, if you use Xfire it's been said that it causes lag and fps issues. Try those two first and come back and repost the new numbers.
You should be getting much higher numbers. Are you in 16,32, or 64 man servers. With my setup, which is much lower than yours, I get consistent 50's with the same settings except I use and Audigy 2 ZS. I'll get 80-90 fps in 16 man servers, and 60's in 32. Good Luck.

Ok, i will try this... but i still dont think such a setting would destroy FPS that much...

I highly doubt the PSU is the problem. The seasonic s12 is one of the top psu's out there. Many people feel it's better then the hyped jetengined PC Cooling 510. It is nVidia certified for SLI - with a total 12V of 36A on dual rails (18A each). See: Specs

FRESH partition and format - with nothing installed but BF2... so no spyware/virus problems ... i ran scans anyhow just to be double sure... the system is as clean as a surgeons glove.

              No use of Xfire yet.

              I usually play 40-64player servers....

Does anyone know what the numbers mean in the display fps? ## / ## ?
              Why 2 numbers?

as listed, i definatly dont need a diff. processor - the 3700+ is more then enough.

I will install 3dmark05 and 04 tonight and post the results.

i beleive the first is your frames per second and the second is CPU usage, so someone told me anyway

Fps/Cpu load, and for some odd reason this game does show dramatic changes in fps with sound changes. I'd try that first and check it out. A full 64 man server you should get around 60-70 steady with your rig and settings, maybe higher. I'm just guessing.

I was the one that posted the link a while ago about how a 3000 and FX-57 gets the same FPS w/ a 78GTX...but now that I actually have the card, I think I'm gonna call ******** on that benchmark. I am getting pretty low performance, and the rest of my system is pretty good except I could use a better CPU. When I buy my 4000 San Diego, I will post any differences I notice, especially if there is an FPS increase.

                      Wrong.

Even todays best CPUs bottleneck high end video cards.

Also, you should lower some settings, You can't get 60-100 fps with those settings.

Bf2 is that demanding, and I have a somehwhat similar, but better system.

Agree! Delete your current driver and try 77.77. 78.01 was intended for mobile users.

Also... S12-600W I'm jealous of your PSU.

When i switched it to software, frames now run anywhere from 70 - 95fps!!!!!! THANK YOU!

it's a shame i just spent about $286 on a Fatal1ty sound card... but o well! as you see from my list, i like the best of the best! :-)
