Re: 6800 GT or 1 GB of RAM?

Right now I have 2 sticks of 512, but I really don't have the money to get 2 new 1 GB sticks. If I get a fast 1 GB + the slow ones I have now will I still notice an increase? I'm no sure if my computer will allow this though, do I have to get 2 new 512s rather than a new 1 GB?

Are you kidding? I don't think doubling the pipelines and the memory size, interface, and clock speed is such a small step.

If you get the RAM, you'll have to remove your older RAM since you can't run different types at the same time(e.g. PC2100 and PC3200). Get the 6800GT and replace the RAM later on.

You don't have the 250-300 bucks for ram but your looking at a 6800GT???

No don't get 1 fast stick... you can't buy fast 1G sticks in singles. Adding more memory while keeping the existing ram won't help you, you'll be stuck at 160 Mhz or worse 160 will slower timings.

Bite the bullet and get the 2G of ram corsair XMS, Geil PT, OCZ Plat... few others. Stay away from anything that says value ram, CAS=3 or CAS=2.5 for that matter.

Also reported speeds don't mean much as long as its pc3200 or better and has low cas. My PC 3200 stuff runs at 2-3-2-5, one would think that PC4200 would be better but if you have to run it at 4-6-6-8 it's trash.

I just bought the 6600 GT so if I return it and spend the 175 I have + the 240 from the card I could get a 6800 GT. What if I take the slow RAM out and put in 1 GB of new fast RAM?

I can only tell you what I would do. I would return the 6600GT and get the 6800GT. BF2 scales best with a high end video card - no matter what others may say about adding RAM.

Several tests have been conducted regarding the impact of video cards and RAM on BF2 so you should be able to find some comparrisons. Here are a few with differing opinions.

My new 6800GT happyily sings along with 1GB (2x512MB) with everything on high but textures meduim. As soon as textures are set to high you will see why more than 1GB is necessary, its unplayable. Loading times are much longer with 1GB too but I can live with that.

I would defo return the 6600GT and go for the 6800GT. Get new memory when you can afford to.

Hey, im thinking of upgrading, but should i get another 1Gig stick of RAM, which would give me 2x 1gig sticks, or get a new vid card, prob an x800 or 6800 or one sort or another. I am thinking the RAM, but im not sure how much it will help as my vid card is only an ATI 9550 256MB. So what should i do?

Without question, my answer for your system is Video card.
