All I know is that there WILL be a 7800 vanilla. I am not sure what the specs are though, or when it will be released :)

Yes, im not positive as when the release will be niether. Also there will be a 7800ultra i do believe. This might be released when the r520 is to be shipped. Only time shall tell.

7800 Ultra = 7800GTX. Nvidia said many times that GTX replaced the Ultra name. R520s might only have a small advantage over 7800GTX, I doubt it would be enough to see another high-end card released by nvidia.

Oh, I swore I read somewere that there was still going to be an ULTRA. Thanks for informing me of my fualt. As said by needle the GTX is the ultra and still not positive on the vanilla 7800.

Nvidia talked about releasing 2 more cards using the 90nm core. There were some rumors that one of them might be another high-end card to match the R520. Although most believe these will be mainstream cards (i.e. 6600). Nobody really knows what R520 will bring, and crossfire after that. For example the inquierer reported that R520's performance is very similar to 7800GTX's. nVidia will need a big reason to make another high-end card. For example the X850XT-PE is much stronger than the 6800 Ultra but nvidia didn't do anything about it, instead they made a new series, 7800's.

7800NUs will be out eventually. Nvidia is just waiting for the right time I'm guessing. I wish they would of released all of em at once. But, it wouldn't really be a smart business move.

Timing seems to be the thing. Right now, if they release another card like the 7800NU, it will present a marketing issue. Currently, at least from what I see, 7800GTs are 399, GTX's 450+, but also, the 6800 NU is at 199 AGP/250+ PCI-E, 6800 GT 299ish AGP/325+ PCI-E. Unless nvidia does another set of price cuts and phase outs, a 7800nu might screw up things a little for now.

Big ALSO: nVidia did mention they might port over the 7's to AGP, given that the AGP bridges is there and all it needs is implentation and the demand was strong enough to justifiy it. I only really see the 7800 NU's, MAYBE 7800 GT's and mid range 7-stuff going with it, because of the increased size of the card will present a issue when installing. Then again, the market is headed towards now PCI-E, and its probably now 70% with AGP, 30 % PCI-E, with the situlation hella changing mid-2006....

Then there is ATI. The r520 has potential, but we'll see. If ATI has one of these for AGP and PCI-E, nVidia has to respond quickstyle...

I think nvidia will only release 7800 AGP counter-parts if ATI's R520 AGP does well. If it sells well then nvidia has a gap that ATi has an advantage over. Otherwise I doubt we'll see 7800 AGP card.

As for me...
I have decided not to purchase a 7 series card. I feel that it will be more worthwhile to go with an 8 series card next summer to see what Nvidia brings out. Maybe there will be new technologies and a whole new platform. If so, I will have enough money next summer to do that

Well you can always play the waiting game. There's always something new coming out. I'm not saying don't, I'm just saying that once you buy your card, don't be surpries if the next-gen cards come out in a couple of months again.

Wrong.

The GT is the base model, the GTX is the mid model, the Ultra, due out before christmas is the premier model.

It has been posted many times on the inquirer.net among other websites.

Nope, you're wrong. The GTX is the new name for Ultra. Nvidia has said it because of the popularity of the 6800GT. If there's anything I know about computers, it's nvidia vid cards.

Here's an article where nvidia clearly said that Ultra Branding is being replaced by GTX:

I've heard that hte ATi R520 isn't going to be the flagship model, only the first next gen card released by ati. It's supposedly only supposed to have 16 pipes, but have insanely high clock speeds, they say it might just perform up to the 7800GTX. BUt the R580 is rumored to have more pipes, but it's coming out later.

Dude those articles are from july 21st. They are false. What you call rumors. Those pics are of the nVidia Quadro FX 4500. Like a second after those pics were posted on the net, everybody said its BS and it's the next quadro. The Quadro FX 4500 just came out:

There's not gonna be any 7800 Ultras. You wanna listen to the INQ? Read this article: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=25730 . It says the R520's performance is very close to nvidias FLAGSHIP card the 7800 GTX. Nvidia won't release another card especially since the inq reports the R520 to have same performance, now would it?
