Im afraid I agree that there will be an Ultra......Remember the Geforce 2? The GTX was the top model until ATI released their new card, then the Ultra came out. From a marketing perspective, Nvidia is waiting for ATI's new card to hit the shelves before releasing an Ultra model, they would be fools not to have a more powerful card to combat whatever ATI releases. Nvidia has built a good brand name with the Ultra slogan, and people recongnise that as the flagship model.

As previously mentioned, I always skip a generation of gfx card before upgrading. I dont want to start an argument but I see no point in going from a 6x series to an 7x series as performance is very similar.....but this is all from a performance per pound ratio.

Btw, it was Geforce 2 GTS (32mb and 64 mb).

Who knows really if nvidia decides to bring a ultra out? After all, despite them saying "GTX = ultra", there are reports that the 7800GTX can clock 450+ dead easy on the core, implying that an ultra isn't too far off. Thats if ATI releases a card thats damn close enough to prompt nvidia to release something faster to stay on top.

Launching a product is very hard on a company. If ATi is close in performance but a little faster, there won't be anything new. It takes a long time to develop a new product, test it, and launch it. Nvidia would be waisting TONS of time and money that they could spend developing the next gen cards using a 90nm core. I know nvidia is already done developing the G80 core which will be the 8 Series cards and said it will come out in 2006. I bet we might see some 7800 GTXs with 512mb of memory come out but that's up to the OEMs not so much nvidia.

Nvidia has suprisingly decided to cancel its upcoming G70 Ultra card in an attempt to solidify and secure sales of the standard G70 line.

Nvidia G70 ultra would likely be very competitive to R520 XT but it would hurt G70, Geforce 7800 GTX sales and therefore Nvidia won't release it. So all of you who have been waiting for 7800 Ultra you can just forget about it.

Business wise it's better to ship many GTX and GTs and sell them in quantities than to release a limited but faster Ultra. We learned that Nvidia shipped a few tens of thousands of GTX and GTs already and it has been shipping in numbers ever since. Last thing you want is to upset people with releasing Ultra, a card that would be marginally faster than G70 and likely to create more problems than solve them.
