Just got a 6800GT...but

After cleaning/reinstalling drivers Ive found that my new XFX 6800GT is clocked at 350Mhz Core and 900Mhz Vram. Any ideas why memory is only running at 900Mhz and not usual 1000Mhz?

Im thinking its either standard on modern XFX's or my PSU is not feeding enough juice. Any ideas?

A quick google suggests XFX 6800GT's are normally mem clocked at 1000Mhz, which suggests (in my rather novice opinion) throttling due to lack of juice from the PSU, like you said, or perhaps overheating? What PSU do you have?

Your sig mentions your XFX 6800 died, what happened to it?

Its a Qtec 450 Watt PSU. Looking at the 12V rail, looks like it can only feed 18Amps. I have 2 Hard drives on the same cable.

My 6800 died due to poor cooling and ocd too much with stock HSF. It was a very hot day too.

I highly recommend getting a new PSU asap. If your old vid card died because of it, get a new one. Also, see if you can improve your cooling, as 6-series cards do get hot...

That Qtec PSu may well be your problem, I've heard a lot of bad thing about them.

The old card died as I pushed it too far not cause of the PSU.

If the PSU was to blame, wouldnt it clock down the power hungry core and not the ram.

Well, if you get another PSU, get one with at least 20 amps on a +12v rail, or dual +12 v rails that add up to 20 amps or more. Antec is usally a good brand, heres some from newegg that have nice dual +12v rail amp ratings: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ubmit=Property
Those are all great, they shouldn't hold back anything if you buy one 400 watts or more.

I have a CoolerMaster PSU and it does me very good. 430W and 18A's on the 12V rail :)

Actually my QTech only has a single 16Amp 12v Rail. Pretty poor really. Whats the power usage of the 6800GT?

That 16 amps is just way too low for a gaming rig. The 6800GT consumes 55.39W in the under load and 23.41W at idle.

But 16Amps on the 12V rail equates a max of 192Watts. I dont think I would even be coming close to that in total.

Does the 12V feed to the Cpu share power from the main rail or is it seperate?

The +12 volt rail feeds the whole system including the motherboard, CPU, fans, hard drives, optical drives, PCI cards...

would i be good with a 20 amp 12 volt rail 450w with these specs

7800gt
160gb 7200 rpm
1gb pc3200 ram 1 stick (upgrading to 2gb later)



duno i looked on the asus site and typed my specs in it told reccomended me a 350 watt psu with a 17 volt + rail

but yet ppl on this forum are tellin me that i need at least 24 amps on my 12 volt rail

Yea I know the 12V rail powers HD/CD/Fans etc but I thought the CPU and Mobo feed mainly from the 3.3v and 5v supplies, (these are 28Amp and 35Amp respectively on my PSU). Maybe I should invest in a decent beefer one.

Death Merchant, I would like to see more amperage but if it is stable and if the PSU is of quality that works like it should - I would say you are ok - so long as you are stable.

Just be aware that you are cutting it real close and if you experience any stability problems, you will know what to do.
