risers are little brass pieces that keep your motherboard about a half inch off the inside of your case to prevent any shorts. They screw into the case (all the holes are already there) then the back of the brass standoffs is a hole that the screw the holds the MoBo screws into. If you have all the parts ready to go you can put a PC together in under 3 hours. If you want to have a nice "clean" inside it can take much longer, but only neat freaks worry about that. Although I cleaned up my wires a bit (helps the airflow) I didn't go crazy and shorten cables and shrink wrap them.

It takes more time getting all the drivers installed and your windows fully updated and customized to your liking than installing your components. Do some googling about building a PC to help you get started.

About 3-4 hours including software and drivers for a basic build.
I spend atleast 2-3 on wire management alone though.

My first build took me around 6 hours including install of software. Would have been shorter, but I had to search around for the proper drivers for a sata hd. And dont bother wasting your money on an anti-static wristband, just touch some metal (like the case or what have you) every so often to avoid static. I built mine in my kitchen cause it has tile, as opposed to building it on carpet.

Best to go online with another pc and download all driver that you will be wanting ahead of time. Also if you are not buying a copy of xp with sp2 then download the Service Pack 2 SDK so you can instal it straight away before adding drivers.

I would recommend reading the most excellent guide here ... http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html I don't think there is a better "free" guide out there.

Well, let's see, it took me 1 week cause of a faulty motherboard, i returned it and bought a new one from newegg.com (courtesy to their extremely fast shipping). From then it took me about 1 hour, installed Window XP Pro SP2, got it goin in about 2 hours. I had lots experience to get the thing all up in 1 hour, every day i was trying to fix it, i was checking all the cables, the hardest thing to do after i got the new mobo was to get off the old mobo, the case i bought came with unusual mounts for mobos.

You don't need to buy risers, most good cases come with either brass posts or a pre-formed threaded riser in the plate the motherboard sits on.

Things that can take time are......

Finding where the case connectors go on the motherboard, ie speaker, reset, HDD Led etc.These are in the motherboard booklet.
Connecting HDD, CD/DVD drives and keeping cables tidy, this will aid cooling as an untidy case will inhibit air-flow.

It's best not to see how fast you can build the system, better to take a bit of time ensuring you do things right.
It is possible to have a new system up and running(OS, drivers etc)in a few hours, but it's ongoing and could take days before you have it fully functional.

yeah im probably gonna spend a good 3 hours each day getting everything right, i may read over the mobo manual once before i build and also does the thermaltake tsuanmi case have brass post or a threaded riser?

Mine has the threaded riser, it's like a pre-formed bump with a threaded hole.
Brass posts are more expensive to make, you can also get a steel posts which is fixed in place and not screwed in like the brass ones are.

A note about ESD(Electro Static Discharge).
There are several ways to protect from this, ground yourself with a special strap around the wrist and connect it to a radiator or something metal that's grounded.

There are special plugs in the UK, where you can plug the wristband into so earthing oneself.
Not sure how other countries ground electrical equipment, in the UK we have three pin plugs. Live, Neutral and Earth.

can take half a day or a whole weekend, depends if you blow your motherboard by accident {acts sheepish}

Don't worry, I've had my fair share of mishaps too. :)

The plastic mobo risers should be supplied with new boards by default.

Takes a fully saturday for me...I go slow and fiddle with everything trying to make it perfect...but I am a bit of a hobbyist....I dont do it for a living.

I build computers, thats my job, I build all day, in 8 hours I build about 7-8 machines. Assembly including wire management takes only about 20-30 Minutes. then about an hour installing windows.. (30 mins installing/20-30 mins with updates)...and as for the paper washers...never used em, never had a problem, as long as you dont do a jig on your shag carpet before installing mobo etc. u should be fine.
