    9800 or 6600GT

My old 9700 pro is starting to get a bit knackered. Thinking of upgrading.

My price range means looking at the 9800 pro or 6600GT.

Any thoughts on which to get in terms of performance and known problems.

    Help appreciated.

Yeh 9800 pro is a bit old now, gte the 660gt try and look for a 256mb version or a 256mb version of the 9800 pro (or is the pro already 256mb)

6600 Gt, its a better card than the 9800 pro but not so better (Except in Opengl where it rox and the fact that it can deal with shaders 3.0). However, as your 9700 pro is not much behind a 9800 pro i would suggest u to save some more money, keep with the 9700 pro sometime and do a real upgrade, like a 6800 GT (I used to have an 9700 non pro and a few months ago i bought one of those beasts called "6800 GT" and it's powerful). Think about it. Anyway, u should post the rest of your rig as maybe there is something that needs upgrading more than the gfx.

Its better to spend a bit more and buy a card that will last a lot longer, like the 6800 gt.The 9800 and 6600 are getting left behind quickly so you would just end up buying another card within a year or so.

Its not really a waste. But with it you'll probably need a larger monitor then 17" if u havent already got one. I hear the 7800's true power is in the large resolutions.

9800 quickly being left behind? by the X800 and higher yes, but it can still play BF2 on mostly high settings and 2x anti aliasing...and I only have the 128mb version

I have an X700, falls just short of the 6600GT in benchmarks, but only $120 so if your on a budget its a great card

Sell your 9700 PRO get about ($70-$100) for it. Use that to help you get an X800 PRO or higher.

9800 PRO or 6600 GT isnt much of an upgrade from a 9700 PRO. Your better off saving your money for a year then buying.

I have it also. On all high with no AA though. If I turn on AA I get ground texture flickering/flashing.

Its getting pretty old, its already more then 1.5 years old. Whats the point of upgrading to something that is slightly newer but still old.

                        Re: 9800 or 6600GT

Here ATI has the x800 PRO AGP and a x800 PRO PCI-E Refurbs for sale.
They are refurbished meaning someone returned them for some reason. But they are guranteed to work and still come in the retail box with everything included.
They also come with a 3 year warranty.
                        Enjoy

                        Only 200 dollars each.

Thats 50 dollars more then a 6600 or 9800 but a lot better.

Yeah if your gona upgrade, upgrade to somehting new. The dumbest upgrade I did was go from a fx5200 128mb to a fx5700 256mb and it sucked.I have a 9800pro right now and I'm waiting on my x800xl but dumb UPS is to slow.
